Pierce's eyes were filled with profound remorse. "It's all my fault. Everything is my fault. I almost lost you and the baby. I deserve to die."

Riley gripped his hand tightly, her tears flowing endlessly.

Pierce turned his hand over, clasping hers. "Riley, I know I was wrong. I promise this will never happen again. Please stop crying. You just gave birth, and you're so weak. Crying now will damage your eyes."

He kissed the back of her hand tenderly. "Focus on resting and recovering. Once you're better, you can punish me however you want."

Riley pulled her hand back and turned her face away again. "I don't want to see you right now."

Pierce forced himself to stand up using the bedframe. "Then I'll go out to the living area. If you need anything, just call me, and I'll be right in."

Riley didn't reply and simply closed her eyes.

He stood by the bed for a few seconds before turning and limping out.

He didn't step back into the room for the rest of the afternoon, but Riley knew he hadn't left. She could hear the faint murmur of his conversations with Mrs. Gable in the front living room.
