The Divorce That Brought Us Back novel Chapter 396

Nora couldn't help but think back to when she and Maloney got married. Her parents-in-law had disliked her, and her own family had universally exploited her. Yet, during their formal meeting, her father, siblings, parents-in-law, and brother-in-law had all shown up. They had sat together and politely discussed the wedding details.

"Stop talking, you two," Nora whispered, tapping Cassidy and Felix on the arm. "It's starting next door."

The three of them leaned against the partition.

They heard Penelope Hart get straight to the point. "Have you considered the conditions I proposed last time?"

"We've thought it over, and we accept all the conditions."

Mrs. Smith looked at Jasmine with a face full of faux maternal affection. "Our Jasmine isn't exceptionally beautiful, and her personality is far too dull. It is truly her absolute honor that Mr. Hart has taken a liking to her. Once she joins the Hart family, we will have to trouble you, her mother-in-law, to teach her the proper rules."

Penelope gave a faint, unreadable smile. "Don't trouble yourself over it."

Mrs. Smith turned to her daughter. "Jasmine, you must dedicate yourself entirely to serving and honoring your parents-in-law, do you understand?"

"I understand," Jasmine replied flatly.

Mr. Smith chimed in, his face stern. "You've never been as smart as your sister or brother. Latching onto Mr. Hart is the greatest blessing you will ever have in this lifetime. Without your parents around to help you in the future, you must watch what you say and do. Do not cause any trouble, understand?"

"I understand," Jasmine repeated, her tone unchanged.

This conversation was a textbook classic of toxic parenting.

Cassidy couldn't bear to listen anymore, but knowing the partition offered zero soundproofing, she didn't dare speak out loud. Instead, she pulled out her phone and texted Nora: [Did I just time-travel back to the Middle Ages?]

Nora: [I think I did too.]

[What exactly is she doing here today? Are you sure this is a meeting of the parents?]
