The Divorce That Brought Us Back novel Chapter 88

And Yates was the final vine, meant to wrap itself tightly around her heart.

Together, they would control every breath she took for the rest of her life.

Until the day she died.

Jasmine's breathing hitched abruptly, her chest rising and falling as a suffocating wave of panic clamped down on her throat, making it impossible to draw a full breath.

"Jasmine." Nora rubbed her back in alarm. "Are you okay? Is the car too stuffy?"

Hearing this from the driver's seat, Cassidy cracked the window.

The crisp autumn breeze rushed into the cabin, pulling Jasmine back to reality. She took a deep breath, firmly locking away the agonizing dread swirling in her mind.

"I'm fine," Jasmine managed a weak smile at Nora.

"Try to clear your head," Cassidy interjected. "That job I was talking about earlier is genuinely perfect for you. It's basically tailor-made."

Jasmine didn't know how to do anything. How could there possibly be a job perfectly suited for her?

As far as comforting lies went, this one was wildly absurd.

"She's not kidding," Nora insisted. "You've already made the break; you can't go crawling back now. You have to take that first step toward independence, and this is the ultimate transition gig."

Cassidy was prone to wild exaggerations.

But Nora was notoriously practical. Hearing her back up the claim made Jasmine waver. "Are you sure?"

"A hundred percent," Cassidy declared. "Free room and board, full health benefits, no clocking in, no office hours. You can do whatever you want all day, as long as you show up when they need you."

Jasmine immediately felt suspicious again. "I don't want you guys treating me like a charity case."

"No, no, it's an actual job! You have to put in real effort and be physically present," Nora explained earnestly. "To be honest, I even tried out for it, but the footage sucked, and they fired me."

Jasmine gasped. "You got fired?!"

She nearly jumped out of her seat. "Then how on earth am I supposed to handle it?"

"Because you're cut out for this specific job, and I'm not," Nora replied with absolute sincerity.

Jasmine's curiosity was officially piqued. "What kind of job is it?"

Nora paused to think. "It's kind of hard to explain. You'll see when we get there."

"But she got fired," Cassidy added unhelpfully.

"True," Nora admitted.

Jasmine stared at them. "..."

What in the world was this mystery job?!

The elevator dinged at the twelfth floor.

Brimming with anticipation, Jasmine followed the girls down the sleek hallway until they stopped outside one of the doors.

Cassidy knocked twice.

The door swung open.

A young man stepped into the threshold.

Standing just off to the side, Jasmine didn't even get a chance to register his face before she was nearly blinded by his shock of platinum-blonde hair.
