The inventory Gifted security guard involved was arrested, too. Scott handed him straight over to the Sovereign Research Institute for experimentation.

The guy had even been a squad leader.

Hayley was called into Scott’s office.

“You took the supplies, didn’t you?” Scott asked, watching her with a faint smile.

“You calling me in here to say thanks?” Hayley shrugged, pulled out a chair, and sat right in front of him like she owned th place. She grabbed an apple off his desk and took a casual bite.

“I should thank you,” Scott said, nodding. He pulled out an A–level access card and slid it across the desk. “Starting today, you’re promoted to security captain.”

Hayley blinked.

For a second, she just stared at the card, nearly choking on the apple in her mouth.

She had come here undercover to investigate and somehow ended up getting promoted.

“A security captain has broader clearance than regular guards,” Scott continued. “You can apply to enter District Two. Distric Three is off–limits for now, but you can tag along with guards who have inventory–type abilities when they’re moving shipments.”

Before he even finished, Hayley reached out and snatched the A–level security captain’s card.

“Guess I was born for this. Security captain’s my calling.”

Scott didn’t know what to say to that.

Hayley swapped out her old card, turned, and headed straight for the door.

“You’re just leaving?” Scott asked.

“What, you planning to keep me for dinner?”

Scott’s long lashes lowered slightly as he looked at her. “If you want, Lcan.”

“Yeah, no thanks. I can’t afford your kind of dinner.‘

She didn’t even look back as she walked out.

Once the office door shut behind her, Scott let out a quiet laugh.

Now that she was a security captain, layley was assigned ten subordinates.

“Morning, Boss!”

“Boss!”

All ten greeted her in unison.

Hayley gave them a quick once–over, barely interested. They all looked exactly the same in uniform.

“I don’t do a lot of rules,” she said. “Just one: keep a low profile. You keep your heads down. If trouble shows up, stay far away from it. Don’t get involved. When you’re working, cut corners if you can. If you can coast, then coast Whatever you do, don’t go out of your way to stand out.”

The group fell completely silent.

“Oh, and if I come across anything good, I’ll share.”

“Thank you, Boss!” they responded instantly, voices full of relief.

After a quick rundown, Hayley handed the team off to Griffin to manage.

As a captain with almost no presence, once she walked away, none of the ten could even clearly remember what their boss looked like.

From then on, Hayley had to report in for daily roll calls.

The next morning, she got up and headed over.

Sawyer was the one calling names. As Scott’s assistant, he was basically the superior over all the security captains.

Hayley blended into the crowd of captains and activated her Ghost Mode. Even after Sawyer finished roll call and went through the day’s assignments, he never once noticed her.

When it was over, Hayley casually drifted off toward District Two.

She submitted a request to inspect the fire safety equipment, and the gates opened for her almost immediately.

District Two was laid out pretty much the same as District One.

A wide transport corridor stretched out ahead, connected to a series of production workshops.

They made everything here: clothes, tools, everyday supplies, even weapons.

Harrison’s office sat in a standalone building further inside.

Hayley headed that way. Before she even got close, she overheard people talking up ahead.

“Mr. White’s in a mood again. Somebody’s definitely getting it today.”
