Chapter 836
“Do you know anything about the giant zombies here? Are they only in Fairfield?” Hayley continued asking.
“Yes.” Clark’s answer came even more certain this time. “They only exist in Fairfield. I’ve been around this area for years. Fairfield’s always been different. Zombie evolution here doesn’t match anywhere else. Because of the giants and that toxic fog, we gave up on the city.”
Hayley went quiet after hearing that.
A thought surfaced, heavy and unmistakable.
Her expression turned serious.
She used to think the toxic fog was just some accident from chemical plants. Now it was clear That was not it at all.
This was deliberate. Someone had been releasing that green gas on purpose, forcing the zombies here to mutate.
A name rose in her mind, almost too obvious.
Ascendant Creed.
It had to be them.
At that moment, the fog outside began to thin. The city slowly revealed itself.
“Raarh!”
Below the ridge, the streets were packed with wandering zombies.
As the haze cleared, a few of them picked up the scent of living people. They flung their arms forward and charged, snarling as they came. They moved faster than normal zombies. Their legs bent with unnatural spring, joints snapping with sharp, elastic force.
One of them launched itself nearly ten feet into the air, grabbing onto rocks and branches as it climbed up slope with terrifying agility.

In seconds, Hayley saw it again and again along the cliff face, its head tilted, its swollen red eyes bulging out of its skull, its skin a sick green.
“Raarh! Raarh!”
More zombies scrambled up after it, shaking their heads in frenzy as they sprinted forward.
The rough terrain jolted its already torn-open abdomen wider. Rotting intestines and chunks of organ meat sagged and slipped free.
With every frantic step, wet pieces slapped onto the ground behind it, dark and unrecognizable, like rotten guts falling apart mid-run.
Clang!
The zombie lunged and slammed into the vehicle’s window.
Its rotting face slammed against the glass, mouth stretched wide in a hungry gape.
Broken yellow teeth scraped and clicked as it bit down again and again, while its bulging eyes pressed flat against

the window, leaking dark, bloody fluid that streaked down the glass.
“Raarh!”
“Ugh!”
The thing howled outside.
Inside the truck, someone grabbed a plastic bag and threw up. Everything he had eaten that morning came right back up.
The sour, fermented smell filled the cabin almost instantly.
Hayley glanced at the rearview mirror, her expression full of disgust as she looked at Ben in the back seat, still retching.
Seriously?
How useless could that guy be?
A few others in the truck smirked, not even trying to hide it.
Only Clark spoke up. “You stay in the truck. Don’t get out.”
“Clark, I…”
Ben tried to answer, sucked in a breath at the wrong time, and gagged again.
[
It hit him all at once. He doubled over as if someone had turned on a faucet in his throat, throwing up even harder.
No one waited any longer.
Clark pushed open the door on the other side and jumped out first. He raised a hand and unleashed a burst of fire, blasting the zombie beside the truck.
The rest of the team followed right after him.
Different abilities flared to life as they stepped out, attacks flying in quick succession, cutting down the charging zombies in front of them.
“Ms. Reid, what’s the plan?” Clark asked.
“You all stay here. In a bit, make some noise and draw a group of zombies over. That’s enough.”
“Got it.” Clark nodded, steady as ever.
“What about us?” June and the others climbed down from the second truck.
