Zach stared down in disbelief Crestford had, what, over a million people? How is there not a single zombie left?”

“You’ve entered our league’s buffer zone.” Griffin’s lazy voice drifted over from the side.

Zach and the others all froze, eyes widening.

Buffer zone… What did that even mean?

They didn’t have to wonder for long.

Ahead of them, something came into view. A massive wall of steel stretched across the land, running between Brookville, Crestford, and Aecraton, sealing off everything beyond it.

Inside the wall, they saw people.

Not zombies, but living, breathing people. Rows of soldiers stood along the top of the wall, lined up in perfect formation, weapons in hand, all watching the helicopter.

Across the structure, two massive words were stamped in bold.

Haylight League.

In that instant, they understood.

Outside the Haylight League, two cities with populations in the millions had been turned into empty zones, a buffer.

Inside that buffer, nothing lived.

Inside the League itself, not a single zombie could get in.

The realization hit them all at once.

They had seen plenty of bases before. Big ones, small ones, scattered all over.

But nothing like this.

A league powerful enough to claim two entire cities as a shield?

This was the Haylight League?

Sure, Hayley had mentioned before that Aecraton was their headquarters, that it had been completely cleared

But she never said Brookville and Crestford had been cleared as well, and turned into a protective zone.

That was on a whole different level!

There wasn’t anything like this in the country…no, anywhere in the world.

From the moment they saw the words Haylight League, June and the others just stood there, mouths open, staring.

They kept staring as the view stretched on, across wide, open fields, into a city glowing with lights, down orderly streets, where people moved with purpose, everything running like clockwork.

Holy hell… Did they just fly into heaven? How could a place like this exist in the middle of the apocalypse?

Even after the helicopter touched down, their heads were still spinning.

Hayley landed inside the city and left them there, telling them to wait for Robert to come register their information.

Everyone except Spencer were double-Gifted.

After joining Hayley’s base, she gained a few duplicate abilities from them, but they were nothing she really needed.

At this point, most abilities were nothing more than another small flower in her already massive garden. She didn’t care about that anymore. What mattered more to her now was people.

These few added to her population.

After settling them in the city, Hayley headed off to pick up Kurt. She brought him and his dog, then went straight to her shelter.

It looked exactly the same as when she left.

Everyone she had assigned there stayed at their posts. No one had entered her inner area white she was gone.

Hayley moved through layer after layer of guards and entered the shelter.1

When she opened the final door, she saw Ruby lying inside.

“Quick. Help Aunt Ruby. Get the toxin out.”

Hayley dumped everything Kurt might need in front of him in one go, including all the serum she had taken earlier from the Sovereign Research Institute and Sovereign Industries.

Kurt’s gaze swept over the pile, then locked onto one vial. His eyes lit up.

“Where did you get this?” he said, stunned. “This is the Sovereign Legion’s evolution serum!”
