Petty held his gaze for a second before starting to look away. Franco's grip on the steering wheel tightened. "What are you thinking about?"
His voice was incredibly husky, as if the question had been burning inside him for a long time.
Petty quietly averted her eyes.
It wasn't clear if she just didn't want to answer or if she simply didn't know how.
Whichever it was, Franco had fully expected it.
"Where are we going?" she asked.
Even over the roaring wind and crashing waves, her soft, steady voice reached his ears, causing Franco's hands to stall on the wheel for a fraction of a second.
A faint smile touched his lips, a glimmer of light cutting through the absolute darkness of his eyes.
He lowered his head, his lips barely brushing the crown of her hair.
"Taking you to see the stars."
Stargazing out on the open ocean?
Petty remained nestled in his arms as the yacht cruised forward, bathing in the moonlight that draped over the sea.
Because it was a full moon, the sky wasn't entirely flooded with stars, but the ones that were visible burned exceptionally bright.
The yacht bobbed gently on the water. Out on the deck, a plush white sofa was illuminated by the soft, ambient glow of a few nightlights.
Franco sat on the sofa, watching Petty as she stood by the railing.
The ocean breeze whipped her long hair around. He had draped a beige shawl over her shoulders before she stepped out of the cabin, and she was clutching its edges as she stared out into the distance.
Far away, a lighthouse swept its beam across the water, melting beams of light into the dark waves.
He stood up, stepping behind her, and gently pulled her flush against his chest.
"Is it beautiful?" he murmured.
Petty looked down at the arm caging her waist. The firm, muscular forearm was marred by a crisscross of jagged scars—the permanent reminders of the factory explosion in the suburbs when he had shielded her with his own body.
