Mrs. Xavier lowered her hands and stared at her husband, her eyes bloodshot.
"How is it foolish? She's dead set on leaving!"
Her voice was laced with despair. "You're still just obsessing over your failing company! Do you really have to watch your own daughter get pushed to the brink by the Hayes family before you're satisfied?"
"I'm worrying about the company for her sake!"
Mr. Xavier slammed his hand hard onto the table, making the silverware rattle violently.
"If the Xavier family collapses, what exactly is she going to use to go up against the Hayes family? How is she going to survive out there? Do you really think getting a divorce is as easy as just saying the word?"
Mrs. Xavier flinched at his sudden rage, her tears falling silently.
He let out a heavy sigh, his voice thick with an exhaustion and age he could no longer hide.
"Do you think I want her suffering over there?"
He clasped his hands together on the table, the veins on the back of his hands bulging. "You saw how she looked today. She is absolutely determined to leave. And you know exactly how Gideon is. He treats Giselle like she's his entire world. When has he ever shown Nora a sliver of kindness?"
He paused, a profound anxiety flashing through his cloudy eyes.
"Those vultures in high society only treat her with respect right now because they're terrified of Gideon. The moment she loses that title, all those heiresses who were jealous of her marriage will tear her to absolute shreds!"
"Marriage is never something you can just throw away on an impulse."
He rested his hands on his knees, his voice brutally hoarse, every syllable steeped in total helplessness. "She thinks it's as simple as signing a piece of paper. She's being completely naive."
He turned his head to look at his weeping wife.
"Even if we step aside and let her file for it, do you honestly think the Hayes family will agree?"
"You know Gideon's ruthlessness better than anyone. If he refuses to let go just to protect the Hayes family's image and maintain the stock market's confidence, can Nora really fight him on her own?"
