Iva’s tears spilled over, streaming down her cheeks.

“Nick, please-”

“You need to get rid of it,” he said, his voice dropping to a cold, hard whisper. “If you truly loved me, you would. If you were truly my mate, you would prove it by choosing me. By showing me that I matter more than that-that thing.”

Iva shook her head, her sobs choking her words.

“I can’t. I can’t do that. Please don’t ask me to-”

“Then you’re choosing it,” he said, his voice flat. “You’re choosing a monster’s spawn over your own mate.”

He threw off the covers and climbed out of bed, his movements jerky with barely contained

rage.

“I’m going for a walk,” he said coldly. “When I come back, I expect you to have made the right decision. Otherwise I don’t know what I will do… maybe returning you to your captors if you are so attach… I m sure that they would be thrilled to see their favourite plaything return

The door slammed behind him.

Iva sat alone in the darkness, her body shaking with silent sobs.

She pressed her hand to her belly, feeling the faint flutter of life within her.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered to her pup. “I’m so sorry. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how to fix this.”

But the silence offered no answers.

And she was more alone than ever.

The hours stretched into an eternity.

Iva lay in the darkness, her body rigid, her mind racing with a thousand fractured thoughts. She had tried to sleep, had tried to calm her racing heart, had tried to convince herself that everything would be okay. But the silence of the house was suffocating, and the weight of Nick’s absence pressed down on her like a physical force.

She thought about their fight. His words echoed in her mind, sharp and cutting.

She didn’t know how long she lay there, lost in her thoughts, when she heard the front door creak open.

Her heart lurched.

She sat up, her eyes fixed on the bedroom door. Her pulse quickened, a mixture of relief and anxiety flooding through her: he was back, he returned.

Nick stumbled into the room.

He was unsteady on his feet, his movements jerky and uncoordinated. His eyes were glassy, his face flushed, and the smell that wafted off him made Iva’s stomach turn.

Alcohol.

But it wasn’t just alcohol.

There was something else beneath it-a sharp, bitter undertone that she recognized with a chill of dread.

Wolfsbane.

It was a dangerous combination, one that some wolves used to chase a thrill. The alcohol dulled their senses, while the wolfsbane gave them a temporary high. But it also made them unpredictable. Volatile.

Dangerous.

Nick stumbled toward the bed, his eyes fixed on her.

“Nick,” she said carefully, her voice soft and calm. “You’re drunk. Let’s get you some water-”

“I don’t want water,” he slurred, cutting her off. His eyes roamed over her, dark and hungry. “I want my mate.”

Iva’s blood ran cold.
