The picture of innocent embarrassment.
But inside Caleb’s mind-
Alarm bells screamed.
Because something about the situation felt profoundly wrong.
Confusion churned violently inside him.
Someone was manipulating the facts.
And Caleb hated being manipulated.
His gaze hardened almost imperceptibly.
If someone thought they could deceive the Crown Prince of the Lycans-
They were making a fatal mistake.
Because Caleb Adama had spent his entire life navigating lies, politics, and ambition.
And he knew exactly how to tear through deception.
Slowly, he leaned back in his chair.
His expression became calm.
Controlled.
But inside, his mind had already made a decision.
He would get to the truth.
No matter what it required.
No matter who was lying.
No matter who stood behind it.
Someone in this story was not telling the truth.
And Caleb intended to find out who.
Caleb felt every pair of eyes in the room resting on him.
The council members were watching with curiosity.
The ministers with poorly concealed excitement.
His father with unmistakable satisfaction.

And Sonia…
Sonia watched him with that same delicate blush still warming her cheeks, her brown eyes soft as if she were shyly waiting for him to acknowledge the bond she had just publicly claimed.
Caleb forced himself to breathe evenly.
This was not the moment to reveal confusion.
Or anger.
Or doubt.
Years of royal training settled over him like armor.
Slowly, he allowed a diplomatic smile to form on his lips.
“You must understand,” he began calmly, his voice steady and controlled, “that this comes as… something of a shock.”
A few of the ministers chuckled lightly.
Caleb inclined his head slightly.
“Especially when one discovers that his supposed mate is the Messenger herself.”
His eyes moved to Sonia.
And for a moment he studied her intensely.
Searching.
Looking for any sign.
Anything.
But Sonia only lowered her gaze again, her blush deepening slightly as if his attention embarrassed her.
“It is the Moon Goddess’ will,” she said softly.
Her voice carried quiet certainty.
The room hummed approvingly.
Several council members nodded.
Caleb maintained his composed expression.
“Yes,” he said slowly. “Perhaps it is.”
Inside his mind, however, his thoughts were racing.
Nothing about this situation made sense.
Yesterday the engagement mark had responded.

The bond had ignited.
The heat had confirmed it.
And after they mated
He had felt the connection/
Raw.
Primal.
Unmistakable.
Those reactions could not be faked.
Not even by the most skilled manipulator.
Yet today…
Another woman was calmly declaring the same destiny.
And worse-
The council had validated her identity as the Messenger.
Caleb’s mind turned the problem again and again like a blade searching for weakness.
There was only one conclusion.
Someone was lying.
The question was who.
And why.
He returned his attention to Sonia.
“It will take some time,” he said diplomatically, “to adjust to such a revelation.”
Sonia lifted her eyes again, meeting his gaze.
“Of course, Your Highness.”
Her smile was soft.
Understanding.
Too perfect.
Caleb inclined his head slightly.
Inside his mind he was already planning his next move.
Proof.

He needed proof.
Not guesses.
Not instincts.
Not emotions.
Solid evidence.
Ancient laws.
Rituals.
Records.
Something hidden in the old texts that might explain what was happening.
Or reveal the deception.
After a few more minutes of conversation, Caleb pushed his chair back.
“I apologize,” he said politely, addressing the table. “But I must excuse myself.”
The king raised an eyebrow.
“So soon?”
“I have matters that require my attention.”
His father studied him for a moment but nodded.
“Very well.”
Caleb turned toward Sonia.
“I will speak with you again soon.”
Her expression softened with clear disappointment.
“I look forward to it.”
Caleb gave a polite nod.
But inside, his decision was already made.
He needed answers.
And he needed them now.

The royal library inside the main castle was one of the oldest chambers on the estate.
Massive shelves stretched from floor to ceiling, packed with centuries of scrolls, records, and ancient books documenting the history of the Lycans.

Few people visited the deeper sections anymore
But Caleb knew exactly where to go.
Within minutes he had several large volumes spread across a long wooden table.
Ancient mating rituals.
Historical records of Messengers.
Old council validations.
Engagement marks.
Bonding traditions.
He read.
Page after page.
Scroll after scroll.
Hours passed.
The sun moved slowly across the tall windows, shifting the golden light across the stone floor.
Caleb barely noticed.
His mind absorbed every piece of information he could find.
Occasionally he made notes.
Sometimes he reread passages twice.
But nothing explained what he had experienced.
The engagement mark.
The heat.
The bond.
All the texts confirmed the same thing.
Those reactions only occurred between true fated mates.
Yet according to the council-
That mate should be Sonia.
A quiet knock interrupted his concentration.
Caleb didn’t look up.
“Enter.”

The door opened.
Footsteps approached.
Then a familiar voice spoke,
“I wondered where you disappeared to.”
Caleb looked up.
His father stood at the entrance of the long table, arms folded behind his back as he surveyed the mountain of books.
William raised an eyebrow.
“You left a rather… excited room behind.”
Caleb closed the book in front of him slowly.
“I had questions.”
“I can see that.”
The king stepped closer, glancing at the open texts.
His expression shifted slightly.
“I must admit,” William said calmly, “I am disappointed.”
Caleb’s eyes lifted.
“Disappointed?”
His father nodded.
“You simply left after learning you had found your fated mate.”
He gestured toward the books.
“And instead buried yourself in research.”
Caleb remained silent.
William shook his head slightly.
“Do you understand how rare this is, Caleb?”
His voice carried genuine wonder.
“A fated mate is already a miracle.”
He paused.
“But for that mate to be the Messenger…”
The king smiled faintly.

“Imagine the strength of such a bloodline.”
Caleb didn’t respond.
Because he had no intention of voicing his doubts without proof.
Accusing the Messenger of lying without evidence would create chaos in the kingdom.
And accusing Sonia falsely could destroy her reputation entirely.
So he kept his thoughts to himself.
But one thing he knew with absolute certainty.
Someone was lying.
And Caleb Adama would uncover the truth.
His father eventually left him to his research.
And Caleb returned to the books.
Hour after hour passed.
Scrolls replaced scrolls.
The light outside slowly dimmed.
Until finally-
Late in the evening-

Caleb leaned back in his chair, rubbing a hand over his face as he noticed the darkness gathering beyond the tall windows.
It was late.
Much later than he realized.
And automatically-
Without even thinking-
His thoughts drifted to the penthouse.
To the girl he had left behind there.
Iva.
