The room fell completely silent after the security system announced Bethany’s name. Nobody moved for several seconds because seeing her at our gates was the last thing any of us expected.
I stared at the screen while Bethany stood beside a vehicle outside the estate entrance. She looked tired even through the camera feed, and something about that immediately made me uneasy.
Conrad was the first person to react. He picked up his phone and contacted security before anyone else could say a word.
“Nobody brings her inside yet,” he ordered. “Full security sweep first.”
The guards acknowledged immediately. The call ended a second later.
Kyra looked between us with wide eyes. The excitement from dinner had disappeared completely.
“Why is she here?” she asked. “I thought she disappeared.”
“So did everyone else,” Zane muttered.
The baby shifted in my arms and made a soft noise. Instinctively, I adjusted the blanket around the small body and tried to focus on something other than the knot forming in my stomach.
Conrad walked toward the screen and folded his arms. His attention never left Bethany.
“Nobody talks to her until security clears the situation,” he said. “Not even through the gate.”
Nobody argued with him. After everything that had happened, caution made sense.
The next hour felt longer than it actually was. Security searched Bethany, inspected her vehicle, scanned her belongings, and checked every possible threat before allowing her any closer.
Meanwhile, normal life refused to stop. The baby became hungry halfway through the wait and immediately announced that fact to the entire house.
Kyra volunteered to help before I even stood up. She had become fascinated with every aspect of caring for the baby.
“I can get the bottle,” she said quickly.
“I can get it faster,” Zane replied.
“You always say that.”
“Because it’s true.”
୮
The argument continued all the way to the kitchen. Even with Bethany waiting outside our gates, they somehow found energy to compete over baby duties.
Lyra quietly disappeared to help prepare supplies without drawing attention to herself. I noticed the effort even though she never mentioned it.
Eventually, Conrad received confirmation from security. Bethany had been cleared.
The meeting was moved to one of the estate’s secure sitting rooms. Guards remained positioned outside every entrance.

When Bethany finally walked into the room, I almost didn’t recognize her. She looked thinner than before, and the confidence she used to carry seemed completely gone.
She stopped several feet away from us. For a moment, nobody spoke.
Conrad broke the silence first.
“Why are you here?”
Bethany looked directly at him. Then she looked at me.
‘I needed to warn you.”
Her voice sounded rougher than I remembered. It carried the exhaustion of someone who had not rested properly in a very long time.
Conrad remained standing. He clearly had no intention of making this conversation comfortable.
‘About what?” he asked.
“About Holmes.”
The room immediately became tense again. Even hearing his name felt unpleasant.
Bethany lowered herself carefully into a chair. Her hands trembled slightly as she sat down.
“He’s getting worse,” she said.
I exchanged a glance with Conrad. Neither of us looked surprised,
“Worse how?” I asked.
Bethany took a breath before answering. “He’s not thinking clearly anymore.”
Conrad’s expression hardened. “That’s not exactly new information.”
“No,” Bethany admitted. “But this is different.”
The room became quiet again. Even the guards outside seemed impossibly still.
Bethany looked directly at me. “This stopped being about revenge a long time ago.”
I didn’t respond immediately. Something about her expression made me think she genuinely believed what she was saying.
“He doesn’t care about power anymore,” she continued. “He doesn’t care about winning.”
“What does he care about?” Conrad asked.
Bethany’s answer came instantly.
“You”
The word hung heavily in the room.
I felt irritation more than fear. Months ago that answer might have shaken me.

Now it unly made me tired.
Bethany noticed the reaction immediately. Her shoulders relaxed slightly.
“That’s why I came,” she said. “You need to understand how far this has gone.”
Conrad remained suspicious. “Explain.”
Bethany swallowed hard. “He’s obsessed with the family.”
Nobody interrupted her. We all sensed there was more.
“He tracks everything,” she continued. “Birthdays. School schedules. Medical appointments.”
My stomach tightened.
“The baby too?”
Bethany nodded slowly.
“The baby especially.”
Conrad’s entire posture changed. The temperature in the room seemed to drop several degrees.
“What do you mean?” he asked quietly.
Bethany looked uncomfortable. “He’s been collecting information.”
A cold feeling settled in my chest.
“What kind of information?”
“Anything he can get.”
Nobody spoke for several seconds. The answer felt worse because it was so vague.
Finally, Conrad stepped forward. “How much does he know?”
Bethany looked down at the floor.
“Enough.”
The response didn’t make anyone feel better.

The meeting continued for another hour as Bethany answered questions and explained everything she knew. Most of it painted a picture of a man becoming increasingly unstable while refusing to let go of the past.
Through it all, normal family life continued around us. The baby needed attention several times.
Kyra volunteered for every possible task. Zane spent most of the meeting watching Bethany like he expected her to reveal a hidden weapon at any moment.
His suspicion never faded. Every answer she gave seemed to make him trust her less.
Eventually, the baby became restless enough that I needed to leave the room briefly. Conrad followed a few minutes later.

Chapter 18 –
We stool together in the hallway while the baby finally settled down. For a moment, neither of us spoke.
“You okay?” he asked.
I nodded slowly.
“I’m angry.”
Conrad almost smiled. “Not scared?”
“No.”
The answer surprised me slightly because it was true. Holmes no longer felt like a wound that could reopen.
He felt like a problem that needed solving.
Conrad brushed his fingers lightly against mine. The simple contact grounded me immediately.

When we returned to the meeting room, Bethany was standing beside the table. Something in her expression had changed.
She looked nervous.
‘I didn’t come here empty-handed,” she said.
Everyone’s attention shifted toward her.
Slowly, Bethany reached into her jacket pocket. The guards tensed immediately.
She pulled out a small flash drive.
‘I stole this from him.”
Nobody moved. Bethany crossed the room and placed the device directly in front of Conrad.
‘I nearly got caught taking it,” she said quietly. “But you need to see what’s on it.”
Conrad picked up the flash drive without taking his eyes off her. The room became silent again.
Minutes later, the device was connected to a secure computer. Security specialists opened the first file while everyone watched.
The video began immediately and my blood ran cold. Because Holmes appeared on the screen standing in the middle of a
room.
A room covered wall to wall with photographs Photographs of me, Conrad, Kyra and Zane and our baby.
And there were hundreds of them.
Holmes stood in the center of the room smiling while surrounded by photographs of every member of our family.
