Chapter 487

Snowflakes

The line disconnected and I wondered what happened. I stared at the cellphone screen for a while before sighing. The connection was bad out here. It had been unstable too when Kashi called minutes agu.

I tried focusing on the road, but my mind kept drifting back to the person who dared leak the news. How could the death and incident at H.O.W.L already be out?

Goodness. I wondered how the director would take it. I knew it couldn’t be Dove. Never. Even though Dove had been there yesterday and saw everything that happened.

I lowered my gaze to my cellphone again and sighed shakily. I wondered what Cupid would think of me. He had probably heard the news too. He would be mad for sure.

I bit my lower lip just when the sudden screech of the car forced my gaze up.

We had left H.O.W.L hours ago and had been on the lonely, long, endless highway, following the map from the flash drive inserted into the car’s GPS.

The driver, a cop from H.O.W.L, held the wheel, and some other cars followed behind for protection after Eshan ordered it.

Dana from the detective department had been told to come with me, and she sat beside me, leaning forward curiously when the car stopped.

“What’s… that?” she asked, breaking the hours-long silence.

I blinked at what stood ahead of us in the deserted road.

A black tinted sedan, facing us. And the moment I saw it, my heart sank to the bottom.

This wasn’t coincidence. This was them.

The thought barely formed when gunshots erupted at once. Dana and I screamed, ducking as the windows shattered around us.

Blood splattered across my face all of a sudden, making me freeze cold. Slowly, painfully, I turned to the driver to see he has been shot in the neck. Blood gushed out violently.

“Ahhhh!” I screamed, reaching with trembling hands for the flash drive in the GPS, but before I could grab it, a violent shove slammed the car backward. It rolled and tumbled to the roadside.

Tension flared, the taste of death sitting bitter on my tongue that I started mumbling.

“Oh goodness. Daddy.”

The backup cars meant to protect us rushed forward, and the cops jumped out, drawing their guns.

The sedan door was pushed opened, revealing machine guns. When they started firing, the very ground vibrated, killing all our backup instantly.

Shivering where I crouched, I reached slowly for the flash drive, cold chills stabbing through my veins. Was this how I would die Oh Moon Goddess, please….

“They’re coming,” Dana whispered in awe.

I peeked out the shattered/window to see masked men walking toward us with guns.

Dana quickly opened her own door and jumped out. I tried to follow, but suddenly everything hit me. Darkness rushing in. Oblivion swallowed me for a terrifying second. I blinked, struggling to return, but my senses scattered.

“Where is the flash drive?” a harsh voice snapped.

I jolted back fully, staring at a gun pointed at my forehead. My blood cooled instantly. The man’s face was covered, and the gun wasn’t a joke.

“The flash drive,” he repeated.

I extended it with shaking hands, heart slamming against my ribs. I gave it to him, hoping he would leave. Instead, he cocked the gun, and tears slipped down my cheeks. Everything flashed by at once. My life, my brothers, Cupid…

And just when he pulled the trigger, a miracle happened.

A car slammed into him out of nowhere, knocking him off the road. The flash drive fell from his hand.

I froze, blinking, one heartbeat from collapsing, before looking up.

A luxurious car stood there, unmistakably out of place. Then it shot forward again as the men from the sedan opened fire on it.

The car smashed into their vehicle, pushing them off the road before pulling away to stop in front of mine.

The door flung open, hurried, and he stepped out like a knight in shining armor. A savior.

The last person I ever expected to find me here.

Cupid.

He rushed to my side and pulled the door open.

“Let’s go,” he said, grabbing my wrist.

I got up quickly, following him, but paused when I saw it. The flash drive on the ground.

“The map to the warehouses.”

I ran for it, snatched it, and turned to follow but Dana suddenly burst out from hiding, jumped into Cupid’s car, and sped off.

“Dana!” I yelled, but she didn’t stop. She left us.

Chapter 487

The men Cupid had previously knocked aside regained their footing, guns raising again. Cupid move with insane speed, dragging me behind the wrecked police car, using it as a shield.

“Cupid…” I was shaking uncontrollably when I saw how he activated something on his wristwatch.

“Stop my car, Desmond,” he said into it.

I watched, stunned, as the car ahead suddenly slowed.

“Desmond!” he barked, and the car stopped completely. My heart nearly stopped with it.

Wow. People could do that? Control a car from somewhere else?

I was still marveling despite the danger when Cupid turned to mesfully, his gaze fierce.

“You listen to me now,” he said. “Once I get up from here, you run to my car. Do you understand me?” Hearing him was easy. Obeying wasn’t. I hated his plan.

“I’m not leaving you here to die.”

He stared at me like I’d lost my mind.

“Who said I am dying?”

He met my eyes, leaned in suddenly, and pressed his lips to mine as if transferring strength.

“Run. And don’t look back.”

Our eyes locked for a heart-stopping moment… and then he stood.

Gunshots fired instantly in his direction, giving me the chance to run. I sprinted toward his car, clutching the flash drive like my life depended on it.

Then a loud gunshot echoed through the air.

I froze. One step away from the car.

Against his orders, I turned sharply.

“Cupid?” My voice shook. “My gods. Cupid?!”
