The taxi stopped before the prison walls and I alighted, opening my purse to check the card, his card. The one Cupid gave me.

I paid the fare with it and quietly walked inside. The security guards recognized me from last time; they looked at me briefly before opening the iron gate for me.

With a grateful nod, I headed in toward the warden’s office, where three men were talking and laughing. But the moment they noticed me, they stopped, turning their gazes to me.

I approached and bowed my head politely.

“I am here to visit… uhm… Marlik Rogue,” I said softly. Before any of them could respond, a voice came from behind me.

“And you are?”

I turned immediately. Sir Jack. The chief warden from last time. I bowed again, clutching my

purse.

“I am here to see Marlik Rogue, sir.”

He studied me for a moment, probably wondering why I was here this late, then nodded and gestured ahead.

“Come wait in the visiting room. I’ll go call on him.”

I smiled in gratitude and walked into the hall, entering the room with two chairs and a table between them.

I didn’t sit. I went to the window instead, swallowing hard.

Earlier today we had been blindsided. Neils White looked genuinely pleased to close the case, and I couldn’t breathe through it. H.O.W.L declared that since the case was closed, there was nothing more to be done, and we all went home.

I tried taking it off my heart, but I couldn’t. So I told my brothers I was going to visit Dove and left, saying I wouldn’t return until tomorrow.

Instead, I took the first taxi here.

I was still lost in thought when footsteps approached, and I turned quickly, preparing myself but it was Sir Jack who appeared.

He looked at me, gentle but firm, shaking his head.

“Marlik doesn’t want to meet you.”

I wasn’t surprised. I should have known he wouldn’t want to show his face to me or anyone tied to the law.

“Tell him I’ll see him.”

The voice came from behind Sir Jack and my blood froze.

Cupid.

Sir Jack turned and looked at the silhouette in the hallway. Cupid moved in, entering the visiting room silently. The chief warden nodded and left us.

At his departure, I went cold. Being in a small room with Cupid stirred emotions I didn’t even know I could feel. He didn’t look at me; his eyes stayed fixed on the entrance.

He was alive.

Until now, I hadn’t heard from him since he saved me on the highway. Seeing him here, standing, breathing, I felt a huge wave of relief.

But it didn’t last.

Footsteps approached again, different this time and the door opened.

Marlik Rogue stepped in, pausing briefly before walking fully inside. Sir Jack closed the door behind him, leaving us alone. The words I’d prepared vanished. I stood frozen, watching him stare directly at Cupid.

“Why didn’t you appear in court today?”

Cupid’s voice was calm, but I heard the bitterness beneath it. The danger, the anger simmering. His eyes flickered over Marlik, and he repeated, harder,

“Why didn’t you tell me she’s dead?” Marlik cut in sharply. “Tell me, Jahan. Why?”
