The air in the sitting room had grown chilly. After finishing a pot of coffee that had long gone bland, it was clear the meeting was winding down.

Wayne and Sebastian rose, ready to leave.

Just then, Wayne’s phone buzzed. He picked up, listened briefly, and his expression shifted to one of apology. Turning to Wilson and Sebastian, he said, “That was the family office-some important guests just arrived, and they need me there to help host. Seb, I’ll head out first. Make sure to say a proper goodbye to Wilson.”

With that, Wayne hurried off, leaving Sebastian alone with Wilson.

“No,” he replied flatly. “I’m her first and only husband.”

Undeterred, Wilson took a subtler approach. “Well… she still spent years living with another man back in Havenbrook-that much is true, isn’t it?”

The moment the words left his mouth, Sebastian stopped walking.

He turned, his eyes icy, and fixed Wilson with a piercing stare.

His lips thinned as he shot back, “Do you consider a failed relationship to be some kind of flaw in a person?”

The question cut straight through Wilson’s pretense.

After all, if this were about anyone else, maybe he could lean on old-fashioned Judgment and confidently say “yes”. But Wilson himself had been married twice and managed a complicated household-what right did he have to criticize someone else’s past?
