I read the note three times as I walked up from the living room up the stairs and into my room, trying to wrap my mind around it.
Connor’s mom slipped this into my dress pocket somehow when I wasn’t looking.
Probably that was when she pulled me closer to herself and said the words that would completely shatter
Connor.
She blamed him for keeping her in a mental asylum. Not just that, she further stated that he was also trying to kill her and that he would do the same with me.
How could I tell him that when he asked me what she said before losing her calm in the room? How could I look him in the eye and say that his mother labeled him a cold blooded killer and a psychopath when he loved her so much.
It would break him, crush him even. I was not going to be the person who added his mother’s fear of him to the list of things he carried on his shoulders.
So I sat on my bed and rubbed my temples, fearing an incoming headache.
I folded the note and put it on my nightstand trying to piece it all together.
She did speak to me normally so maybe this wasn’t a random piece of paper but a clue to something?
But what?
I needed help to decode this message. I needed someone to think through this with me who was not Connor, or Aaron, and who would keep it a secret.
Jane! I needed Jane.
Jane was exactly the right person for this. Jane was a sucker for anything that resembled a mystery, and I had not spoken to her properly in several days, which she would have feelings about.
I hastily picked up my phone and she answered on the second ring.
“Oh,” she said. “Look who remembered I exist.”
“Jane, I’m truly sorry for…”
“No, please, go on. I’ll just be here. Living my life and talking to myself. Maybe, I will adopting a plant because at least it can’t forget about me, though actually it might be dying too
“Jane, I need your help.”
“That’s interesting,” she said, “because I needed your help three days ago when I was trying to decide if I

should text Nate’s friend who might or might not be interested in me, but you were unavailable, so…”
“I will buy you lots of ice cream,” I offered and she took a pause
“What flavor,” she asked?.
“Any flavor you want.”
“And?” she probed, because Jane had learned over many years of friendship that my ice cream offers were merely opening bids.
“And I will watch your favorite daily soap with you, will go shopping with you. I will do anything you want
“Boy this is tempting” She said and I grew eager. “So you will help me?”
“I am not a kid anymore, Sienna. I want the real deal, the juicy bits you haven’t told me yet.”
“About what?”
“About who” she corrected me. “Wanna guess?”
I sighed.
“Fine, I’ll tell you everything,” I grumbled. “About Connor.”
She took another pause, a dramatic and longer one though I knew she was very excited.
“Everything?” she repeated.
“Within reason”
“No. Everything. That’s the deal. Or I am not helping you”
“Jane!!!”
“Everything, Sienna. I have been watching this situation unfold from a distance with zero information and it has been genuinely torturous. You owe me.”
“Fine, I gave up. “I’ll tell you everything.”
“I’m already in the car to your home. I will be there in the next thirty minutes,” she said, and hung up.
I paced in the room, mentally preparing myself for the hurricane I invited in my room because she arrived just like that.
The doorbell rang once and then I heard her voice downstairs, greeting my mom politely.
“Oh hello Jane, are you feeling better now?” I heard mom ask her.
Jane looked at her curiously. “Never been better, Mrs Miller. Why though?”

Chapter 111
“Sienna was with you last night for a sleepover, right.”
Oh shit.

I completely forgot about the masked ball and how Connor had covered up for me using her name again.
“She… was?” Jane mumbled and I hastily climbed down the stairs to control the situation.
“Jane!” I ran towards her and pulled her into a hug, whispering in her ear. “I’ll tell you everyting in my room. Just play along for now.”
Jane wasn’t impressed but nodded.
“Oh yes, Sienna” she rubbed her forehead dramatically. “I still feel a little sleepy but I was getting bored at home so came to meet you.”
1 grabbed her by the wrist and began leading her up to my room, crossing two steps at a time.
“See you, Mrs Miller”
“Have fun” Mom said and Jane stayed quiet for a total of sixty seconds until we entered my room and the door closed behind me.
“So you now use my name to sneak out of the house and spend the night with Connor and don’t even inform me?” She placed her hands on her hips.
“I was going to tell you” I managed.
“When? When your mom accidentally called mine to check on us??” Her voice was rising with every spoken word.
“Shh, calm down Jane.”
“Calm down? You are asking me to calm down after I caught you red handed? No miss, you are going to get interrogated so sit in front of me right now”
She said, pointing at the bed, and I sat, because Jane in information–gathering mode was not someone you argued with.
She dropped her bag and then herself onto my desk chair, pulled her legs up and looked at me like a journalist who had been given their first front–page story.
“So you are not even denying the fact that you spent last night with Connor,” she said.
“Would you believe me if I did?”
“No. But now I need real answers. So let’s start from the basics. How good of a kisser is he?” she asked. “On a scale of one to ten. Go.”
“Jane, are you serious?”

Chapter III
“This is foundational information, Sienna”
“Eleven,” I said, because it was true and the way her eyes popped told me she was expecting nothing less. I just assumed it would end this line of questioning faster than deflecting.
“Eleven.” Jane repeated, savoring it. “Eleven out of ten. Fascinating.” She folded her hands. “What about the other thing?”
“Jane, I am not going to…” I began
“I’m not asking for a detailed documentary,” she clarified. “Just tell me in general, you know. Was it good? Are we talking, like, functional, or are we talking heart racing, nerve–wracking, furniture crushing…”
“We are not talking about this,” I shook my head.
She looked at me with the expression of someone reading a face they knew extremely well.
“Oh Goddess,” she exclaimed. “It was that good, huh?”
“I need you to focus on my problem” I said in an embarrassed voice.
“No wonder he has this casanova reputation if he gave you, a virgin, such an exemplary experience,” she sounded truly delighted.
“Jane.” I threw a pillow at her. “I am trying to tell you something serious.”
“This is serious. Tell me does his touch light your skin on fire? Do you feel his presence even before you see him enter a room? Does he whisper filthy things in your ear while doing the deed?”
“Jane, I am regretting calling you here.”
“Just answer me and I’ll stop.” The she added dramatically. “For now”
I gave her a look and muttered. “Yes to all of it. Now can we please focus?”
I threw a pillow at her which she caught, hugged it to her chest, and sat up straight like gossip time was over and now she had to listen to a boring lecture.
“Okay fine,” she reluctantly agreed. “I am completely focused. Tell me about this serious thing.”
