We both started walking again and I felt the need to speak again just to distract my mind from whatever he had just told me.

I still couldn’t believe my body was reacting like I was already a female wolf in heat.

Shaking my head, I frowned, confusion cutting through the fog of exhaustion. “You still haven’t told me where we are going?”

He looked at me directly then, eyes dark and steady under the soft corridor lights. “You wanted to see my mother’s storybooks.”

I blinked.

The request felt like it belonged to another lifetime. I had asked for them days ago-half as an excuse after the Peter Rabbit hint, half out of genuine curiosity I hadn’t wanted to examine too closely. I had completely forgotten but he hadn’t.

Something warm and inconvenient fluttered under my ribs.

The boy who used to shove me into lockers and laugh when I cried had remembered a throwaway request I made while distracted.

The same boy who had spent years making my life miserable. The same man who had publicly claimed me, cut off a man’s arms for touching me, and then looked at me across a dinner table like I was the only person in the room who mattered.

My heart did an uncomfortable little twist.

“You remembered,” I said, and immediately hated how soft it sounded.

The corner of his mouth tipped up. “I remember most things you say or do, Speckles. Even the ones you wish I wouldn’t.”

Heat crawled up my neck but I rolled my eyes, trying to reclaim some of the armor I used to wear around

him.

“That’s not as flattering as you think it is. Stalker tendencies aren’t attractive.”

“Neither is pretending you don’t want to know,” he replied mildly. “You asked and I’m delivering. Unless you’ve changed your mind and would rather go collapse face-first into a pillow after the little revelation.”

I should have said yes. I should have told him I was too tired, that the books could wait, that the last thing I needed was to spend more time alone with him while my head was still spinning from everything he had just told me.

Maybe late blooming was causing my wolf and body to behave erratically. That was the only plausible explanation.

“At least I know I am not doing it purposely so its like an allergy or something”

Connor was about to open his mouth but I pointed my index finger at me.

“Dont you dare say a word against it”

He raised his hands in mock surrender.

I heard myself say, “Lead the way, then. Before I change my mind.”

Something flickered in his expression- surprise, maybe, or satisfaction. He didn’t comment on it. He simply turned and started walking, trusting me to follow. I did, because apparently my self-preservation instincts had taken the night off.

We moved through the front yard of the mansion.

The sounds of the dining hall faded behind us. My mind wouldn’t stop turning. Part of me still saw the boy who had mocked every soft thing about me.

Another part kept replaying the way he had looked at me when he defended me tonight and counting the number of times he had protected and stood up for me without my knowledge.

The conflict sat in my chest like a stone. I had spent years hating him. Then years forgetting him.

Now he was under my skin in ways I didn’t know how to name, and the rule I had forced between us earlier felt both necessary and completely ridiculous.

Connor glanced sideways at me. “You’re thinking very loudly.”

I furrowed my eyebrows at him. “Don’t tell me you can read my mind as well”

He shook his head. “I don’t need to when your face tells it all”

This man was truly not good for my sanity.

“I’m deciding whether this is a trap.”

“If it were a trap, you’d already be in it.” His voice dropped into something lower, almost lazy. “I don’t usually give advance notice.”

I shot him a look. “That’s comforting.”

“I thought so.” He quipped

We reached the side exit that led to the private driveway.

The night air was cool against my overheated skin. His black car waited under the soft outdoor lights, chrome gleaming.

I hesitated only a second before sliding into the passenger seat. The leather was cool against the backs of my bare thighs where the dress had ridden up.

Connor rounded the hood, dropped into the driver’s seat, and started the engine without another word.

As the mansion fell away in the rearview mirror, I stared out the window and tried to ignore the way my pulse had picked up simply from sitting this close to him in the dark.

The silence between us felt different tonight-less like a battlefield and more like a held breath. I hated how much I noticed it. I hated how much I liked it.

And I hated, most of all, that the boy I used to wish would disappear forever was the only person who had remembered something as small as a request for storybooks.

I was in so much trouble.

“Elder Johanson..” I began after a while. “Do you think he would be pissed at us?”

Connor continued looking ahead.

“He most definitely is. But Maria told me what he did last time as well so he had it coming to be honest”

I chewed at my lower lip.

“But he is the senior most of all the elders and Alpha Asher values his opinion a lot.”

“So?”

I sighed. “I don’t want Elder Johanson to take out his frustration on your succession.”

Connor shrugged.

“He started it. Even after you were polite as per Maria.”

“You trust Maria a lot, don’t you?”

Connor nodded. “She became my mother when my own mother…”

He trailed off and I didn’t need him to finish the sentence.

I slowly reached for his hand and gently placed mine over it.

“Stop finding ways to keep touching me”

I immediately pulled my hand away, earning a chuckle from him.

“I wasn’t trying to touch you”

“You could accept it if you want to. Your body already does.”

I folded my hands upon my chest and tried to just merge with the seat.

“No thanks.”

“So you are not regretting your no touching, no kissing rule?”

I shook my head, clamping my legs shut and crossing them one over another.

“And you better switch to another topic. Stop taking advantage of my body’s reaction I have no control over.”

“As you say, darling”

“And no cheesy nicknames”

“Sure thing”

“And no flirting”

“Stop creating rules you can’t follow. You will only embarrass yourself, my luna”

I pointed a finger at him.

“Stop calling me that”
