“No,” I corrected calmly. “You’re trying not to say what you actually want to say.’

Marcus rubbed lightly against his jaw before finally speaking honestly.

I felt irritation rise almost instantly.
Not because the question itself was unreasonable.
But because everybody suddenly seemed to have opinions about my children.
“I’m handling it,” I said flatly.

Marcus sighed softly.
“Lydia, I watched what that man did to you.”
My expression hardened immediately.
“And?”
“And I don’t trust him.”
I leaned back slowly in my chair now.
“Well, thankfully you don’t have to co parent with him.”
His jaw tightened slightly.
“That’s not fair.”
“No,” I said calmly. “What’s not fair is people assuming I’m incapable of making decisions for my own children just because they care about me emotionally.”
“That’s not what I’m saying.”
“Then what are you saying?”
Marcus looked frustrated now.
Actually frustrated.
“I’m saying I don’t want him hurting you again.”
The words landed between us heavily.
And for one tiny second…
I softened.
