And then my phone buzzed.
Marcus.
Open your door.
I frowned immediately because absolutely not.
I still walked to the entrance anyway.
And there he was.
Holding takeout bags.
“Before you say anything,” he said quickly, “I’m not staying. I just remembered you said you skip meals when you’re stressed.”
I blinked once. 1
How does he know I’m stressed?
Then I remembered.
I had ignored his messages for nearly seven hours.
Right.
Fair enough.
I looked inside the bag.
My favorite pasta.
Garlic bread.
Chocolate mousse from that overpriced restaurant downtown.
“You’re stalking me nutritionally now?” I asked flatly.
He smiled slightly.
“You’re welcome.”
Then he left.
Just like that.
No pressure.
No emotional manipulation.
No trying to force intimacy from the gesture.
And somehow that made it worse,
Because thoughtful men were very inconvenient when you were trying not to feel things.
The problem was that Marcus fit too easily into my life.
The twins liked him naturally.
(motions hmm
He understood my work schedule.
