Later that night, after baths, arguments, water requests, unnecessary philosophical questions, and exactly three. extra hugs each, I finally tucked them into bed.
Ava fell asleep first as usual.
Eli fought sleep dramatically like it personally offended him.
Eventually though, the house became quiet.
I sat alone at the edge of my bed afterward, phone in hand.
Then finally typed:
They still want him to continue.
Dr. Sana replied almost five minutes later..
That is important information.
Then another message came.
Notice something carefully, Lydia. The children are not attaching themselves blindly. They are observing him. Assessing consistency. That means they feel emotionally safe enough to evaluate instead of emotionally desperate enough to cling.
I stared at the message quietly.
Another text appeared.
That is a reflection of the stability you already gave them long before Dave returned.
And somehow…
that made my chest ache a little less.

Birthday?
Lydia’s POV
Officially, it was one week to the twins turning six.
Six.
Honestly, every single time I said the number in my head, my brain short circuited a little.
Because what exactly did you mean I had been someone’s mother for six whole years?.
Six years of tiny socks.
Six years of bedtime stories.
Six years of emotional negotiations with two miniature lawyers who somehow always found loopholes in my parenting.
God.
I loved those children so much it genuinely felt medically concerning sometimes.
And unfortunately for everyone around me, I had entered full birthday preparation mode weeks ago.
Actually scratch that.
Months.
I had been secretly buying gifts for nearly two months now.
