I stood outside Lydia’s door for a few seconds before ringing the bell, trying to mentally prepare myself for whatever version of her I was going to meet today.

Cold Lydia.

Polite Lydia.

Furious Lydia.

Honestly, I would have accepted any version at that point because at least she was still allowing me see the kids

The door opened after a few seconds and there she was standing in oversized lounge clothes with that same composed expression she always wore whenever she was trying not to strangle me emotionally. Her hair was tied back carelessly, glasses resting low on her nose, phone in one hand, coffee in the other.

“Hi,” I said carefully.

She stepped aside slightly without answering immediately.

The kind of silence that lets you know you are being tolerated. Not welcomed.

I entered quietly.

The twins were sitting on the living room floor surrounded by what looked like puzzle pieces, ribbons, little cards, and colorful boxes spread everywhere like someone had exploded a toy store in the middle of the house.

Neither of them noticed me initially.

Or maybe they did and were pretending not to.

Honestly, I could not even tell anymore.

Lydia walked past me casually like I was part of the furniture.

“Hi kids.”

“Hi,” they answered almost automatically from the floor.

Awkward.

Polite.

Still distant enough to remind me that I had missed too much already.

“So what’s happening today?” I asked gently. “What are you both unboxing?”

Eli barely looked up properly.

“It’s our birthday in five days,” he explained casually while trying to force two puzzle pieces together. “So mum is doing a birthday gift countdown till that day.”
