“Sure.”
I heard papers shuffling on his side before he continued.
“The board also wants clarification on the restructuring proposal. Especially the energy division.”
Of course they did.
Everybody always wanted something.
Numbers.
Approvals.
Meetings.
Crisis management.
Acquisitions.
Damage control.
And usually I handled all of it effortlessly.
But today my concentration kept slipping.
Every few minutes my mind wandered straight back toward Lydia’s house.
Toward Ava sitting too straight while pretending she was not emotional.
Toward Eli trying to joke through confusion because humor was clearly his defense mechanism.
I pinched the bridge of my nose tiredly.
That mak?
“Push the investor call to tomorrow morning.”
Stence.
“That bad?”
“I said push it.”
“Done.”
After the call ended, I finally loosened my tie completely and sat down heavily on the couch.
The suite looked immaculate as usual..
Perfect lighting.
Perfect furniture.
Perfect silence.
And somehow it all suddenly felt very empty.
I picked up my phone unconsciously.
Then stopped.
Because what exactly was I supposed to text Lydia now?
Thank you for allowing me explain why I ruined your life?
Ridiculous.
I tossed the phone aside again.
Then after a few seconds picked it back up anyway.
My fingers hovered briefly before typing slowly.
Thank you for today.
I know that could not have been easy for you either.
