“Enough to survive my morning.”
Eli laughed.
Ava came closer to the phone.
“Mom, remember the question?”
1 frowned.
“What question?”

Cars
Lydia POV
“The car engine.”
I groaned.
“Oh my God.”
“You promised.”
“I promised we’d talk about it.”
“And you said you’d research.”
“I did.”
“You researched?”
“I did.”
Eli gasped dramatically.
“She’s actually serious.”
“Excuse me?”
“Mom researched car engines.”
“I am capable of research.”
Ava laughed.
“Okay, Mom. See you soon.”
By the time the kids arrived, I had barely finished my second bite of lunch.
The door opened.
“Mom!”
Two pairs of footsteps thundered through the office.
I barely had time to stand before Ava launched herself at me.
I caught her.
“Hey!”
She hugged me tightly.
Eli came immediately after.
“Me too!”
“Come here.”
Within seconds, I had both children attached to me.

My assistant watched from the doorway, smiling.
Tissed the top of Ava’s head.
“How was your lesson?”
“Good.”
“Did you behave?”
“Yes.”
Eli answered at the exact same time.
“No.”
I looked at him.
He grinned.
“I behaved mostly.”
“Mostly is doing a lot of work in that sentence.”
We sat around the dining table.
I pulled out my phone.
“Okay. The engine.”
Eli immediately sat upright.
Ava folded her arms.
“Teach us.
I cleared my throat.
“First, a car engine is basically the machine that converts energy from fuel into mechanical energy that ultimately helps move the vehicle.”
Eli nodded seriously.
“So it’s like the heart of the car?”
I paused.
“That’s actually a very good analogy.”
Ava leaned forward.
“Does it pump?”
“Not exactly. But the engine has moving parts that work together.”
“Like what?”
I unlocked my phone and pulled up a simple diagram.
“Okay. Inside many petrol engines, you have cylinders. Inside those cylinders are pistons.

Eli’s eyes widened.
Pistons?”
“Yes.”
“They move up and down?”
“Exactly.”
“Why?”
“Because combustion creates expanding gases that push the pistons.”
Ava frowned.
“So the car is basically exploding?”
I laughed.
“In a controlled way, yes.’
Eli looked impressed.
“That’s actually cool.”
“Very.’
I continued.
“The pistons are connected to something called a crankshaft.”
“What does that do?”
“It converts the pistons’ up-and-down movement into rotational movement.”
Ava nodded.
“So that’s what makes the wheels turn?”
“Not directly. But that rotation eventually gets transferred through the drivetrain to the wheels.’
Eli looked thoughtful.
“What’s the drivetrain?”
I smiled.
“Now we’re getting somewhere.”
I explained the transmission, driveshaft, differential and wheels as simply as I could.
Eli kept interrupting with questions.
Ava kept correcting him.
I kept answering.
And somewhere between explaining why gears have different ratios and why electric cars don’t need a traditional internal-combustion engine, I realized I was actually enjoying myself.

“Mom,” Ava said suddenly.

“You actually know a lot.”
I smiled proudly.
“Thank you.”
