Footsteps
Anna POV
“I’m coming.”
Eli sniffed.
“Are you going to call Mum?”
I paused.
“I’m going to fix all of this now.”
He wiped his nose with the back of his hand.
“Better.
I almost laughed.
That cocky little boy.
Under any other circumstance, I would have burst out laughing.
Instead, I turned toward the staircase.
My legs felt heavier with every step.
I needed help.
Real help.
Not the kind where I stood in front of two children and pretended everything was fine.
I needed another adult.
Someone who belonged in this situation.
Someone who could answer the questions I couldn’t.
I reached the children’s room and closed the door behind me.
My hand hovered over my phone.
Dave.
I stared at his name.
Did I really need to call him?
My thumb moved over the screen and stopped.
Should I tell him?
Should I tell him everything before he came over?

Would that be betraying Lydia somehow?
I paced across the room.
Lydia had spoken about Dave before.
Not much.
Mostly about the children.
About how he was an incredible father.
How involved he was with them.
How the kids loved him.
But when it came to Dave as a man?
Nothing.
Not enough for me to know what she wanted.
Not enough for me to know whether she would want him there if she were conscious and able to make that
decision.
I stopped beside the window.
My reflection stared back at me.
What was I supposed to do?
Wait for Lydia?
She couldn’t answer.
Ask the children?
They were children.
Keep Dave away?
That made no sense.
Because if –
I shut my eyes.
No.
I wasn’t finishing that thought.
Lydia was going to make it.
She had to.

She was a fighter.
But if she didn’t-
I opened my eyes.
The children needed their father.
Whatever complicated history existed between Lydia and Dave, that could wait.
Their mother was fighting for her life.
They needed someone who could hold them through whatever came next.
I pressed Dave’s name. 1
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then-
“Hello?”
His voice was slightly breathless.
“Hi.”
A pause.
“Am I speaking with Dave Ashton?”
A strange silence followed.
Then he gave a small, humorless laugh.
“Anna, I know it’s you.”
I swallowed.
“I was actually about to call you.”
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Why?”
“I haven’t been able to reach Lydia for almost twenty four hours.”
My stomach turned.
“Which means I can’t reach the kids either.”

He exhaled.
“That’s not normal.”
No.
It wasn’t.
“What’s going on with her?”
I stared at the closed bedroom door.
“I have something to tell you.”
His voice immediately sharpened.
“Is she okay?”
I opened my mouth.
“First of all…”
I hesitated.
“I hope you don’t have any cardiovascular issues.”

“Yes.”
“Lydia.”
“No, no…”
“Yes.”
