Too Late To Love Me I Already Left With His Twins (Lydia and Dave) novel Chapter 266

Dave POV

“Is Mom fine?”

Ava’s question almost undid all the emotional stability I had managed to build.

For a second, I just stared at her, completely caught off guard by how much those three words could hurt. I had been sitting there trying to hold myself together, trying to remember that I was their father and that whatever happened, I had to be the strong one. I couldn’t afford to fall apart in front of them, not when they were already scared and confused and looking to me for answers I wasn’t even sure I had.

But hearing Ava ask about her mom like that made me want to pull both of my kids into my arms and give them a reassuring hug, even though I knew there was no reassurance I could honestly give them anymore.

I was almost certain they already had an idea of what I was about to say.

Or rather, what we were about to say.

I glanced at Anna, and she seemed to understand immediately. She shifted in her seat and tried to force a smile before saying, “So, kids, I’d have loved to crack a joke right now to lighten the whole atmosphere because this tension is honestly so thick, but none is coming to mind.”

She gave a small chuckle, but neither of the twins laughed.

Her smile faded.

“So yes, this is about your mom.” She took a breath and looked between them. “You two have been asking loads of questions about her location, her absence, which was a little sudden, and her just going off the grid. But I get you. I’d definitely do the same if I were unable to reach my mom. Well, this isn’t about me. It’s about you.”

She looked at me then, almost like she was silently handing me the responsibility.

“Anyways, I’ll hand over to your dad to handle the next important question. Where’s your mom?”

I looked at her, then back at the kids.

Unfortunately, I was the bearer of the bad news.

“So…” I started, but my voice caught. I cleared my throat and tried again. “When your mom was on her way from work, she was involved in an accident, but she was rescued from the accident scene quite fast.”

I paused.

Wait.

Was I giving them too much detail?

Oops.

I rubbed my palms together and continued before I could overthink it.

“And the doctors tried their best to save her, and they succeeded with the surgery, but your mom is currently unconscious, and none of us can tell when she’ll be awake.”

The words settled heavily between us.
