Too Late To Love Me I Already Left With His Twins (Lydia and Dave) novel Chapter 278

Dave POV

Honestly, the last twenty-four hours had been so crazy for me, for real.

Like, I didn’t even know how my brain was still functioning.

My Lydia had forgotten us.

My kids had fainted from all the stress.

And now Anna had arranged for Dr. Sana to come in for a psychological evaluation because apparently, after everything that had happened, we had reached the point where we couldn’t just keep telling the kids to be strong and hope they would magically be okay.

There was too much happening at once.

I remember sitting beside their beds, watching the slow drip of the IVs, telling myself I wasn’t going to sleep.

I was going to stay awake.

I was going to watch them.

I was going to make sure they were okay.

At some point, though, my eyes started getting heavy.

I blinked.

Then blinked again.

And somehow, without even realizing it, I dozed off.

I didn’t even remember falling asleep.

The next thing I knew, warm rays of sunlight were slipping through the hospital window panes and landing across my face.

I squinted and rubbed my eyes.

For a second, I had no idea where I was.

Then I saw the two beds.

Ava.

Eli.

Everything came rushing back.

I looked around.

Anna was gone.

There was a small folded piece of paper sitting on the chair beside me.

I picked it up.

Went to get breakfast for the kids. They’ll probably be awake anytime soon. Don’t panic. — Anna

I stared at the note for a second.

Of course.

Even after everything, Anna still somehow found a way to sound like Anna.

Don’t panic.

As if that was an actual option.

I folded the note and placed it back on the chair.

Then I turned toward Eli.

He looked better.

Much better than he had yesterday.

His face still looked a little tired, and there was a slight sheen of sweat across his forehead, but at least there was color back in his cheeks.

Yesterday, he’d looked almost completely drained.

I reached for the towel sitting beside the bed and gently wiped his face.

“Hey, buddy,” I whispered.

He didn’t move.

I wiped his forehead again, then carefully moved the towel down the side of his face.

After that, I walked over to Ava.

A few strands of her hair had fallen across her face.

I gently brushed them away.

She stirred.

Then her eyes slowly opened.

She blinked up at me.

“Dad?”

“Hey.”

She looked around sleepily.

“What happened?”

I sat down beside her.

“You fainted yesterday.”

Her eyes widened slightly.

“Oh.”

She looked toward Eli.

“He did too?”

“Yeah.”

She swallowed.

Then came the question I had been dreading.

“Mom still hasn’t remembered us, right?”

I felt something squeeze inside my chest.
