Trick Him Into Divorce, Then Flee With His Unknow Kid novel Chapter 398

Chapter 398: Chapter 398 The Announcement

James wasn’t exactly pleased when Ryan’s call came through.

At this point, he no longer cared about preserving their brotherly relationship. If Ryan wanted to meet, James had absolutely no intention of making it easy for him.

But then Ryan mentioned Rose.

James’s eyes narrowed.

“What do you want?”

Ryan was already sitting in his car. He glanced at his watch before replying in his usual calm, detached tone.

“Let’s talk at your club. This concerns Rose, and I hope you won’t let your personal feelings interfere with something that matters to her.”

James let out a cold laugh.

“Whatever you say goes, does it? Need I remind you that Rose is my sister now? The whole family treasures her. I’m not exactly known for my patience either. If you annoy me, I won’t hesitate to put you through a wall.”

“Help me handle this properly, and I’ll do what you want.”

James fell silent.

He knew Ryan well.

If Ryan was taking the matter this seriously, it probably wasn’t something trivial.

“What is it?”

Ryan’s gaze darkened.

“Don’t you want your niece to be protected solely by the Taylor family?”

A week passed in the blink of an eye.

By the time Rose received Charlotte’s invitation, she was still staying at Grace’s private residence.

James had come over as soon as he heard she was there.

For once, the three of them—grandmother, grandson and granddaughter—were enjoying a rare moment of genuine harmony.

They chatted, laughed and even tried their hands at making cookies together.

The results were less than impressive.

The results were less than impressive. Some were too thick, some were oddly shaped, and a few looked as though they had been attacked rather than decorated.

Rose couldn’t help laughing when she looked at the ones James had made.

Just then, her phone vibrated.

It was an invitation from Charlotte, sent directly through Instagram.

Charlotte: Tomorrow is the first major dinner party I’ll be attending since arriving in New York. I don’t have many friends here yet. Would you like to come and join us?

Rose opened the digital invitation.

The venue was one of the most prestigious hotels in New York.

The host was the Mercer family.

James happened to walk over and caught sight of the screen.

His eyes flickered.

“Made a new friend?”

Rose looked up.

James picked up one of the poorly made cookies he’d just made and examined it with a frown.

“It wouldn’t hurt to build a relationship with the Mercer family in Boston. They have access to some very exclusive medical resources. You should get to know them.”

Rose tilted her head.

“Do you know Charlotte?”

“I do.”

James put the cookie down.

“She’s probably going to be Ryan’s future wife. Her family background, education and appearance all fit what the Knight family would want.”

Rose’s expression remained calm.

“So, it seems like a done deal.”

James studied her face.

It seemed that the two families’ intentions were already becoming an open secret.

If the Knights and Mercers officially joined forces, the alliance would certainly make waves throughout the business world.

“You really don’t mind?”

Rose lowered her gaze to the few lopsided cookies in front of them.

“What is there to mind?”

She spoke casually.

“It’s his business. We’re divorced. Do I have any say in who he marries?”

James breathed a quiet sigh of relief.

Yet instead of feeling reassured, he felt a strange ache in his chest.

Rose had been hurt too deeply in the past.

Perhaps her indifference wasn’t because she truly didn’t care.

Perhaps it was simply the way she’d learned to protect herself.

“No matter what happened before, you can go,” James said. “The Taylor family received an invitation too. Everyone will be there.”

Rose considered it for a moment.

If the rest of the Taylor family was attending, it would indeed be strange for her to stay away.

“Oh.”

She set down the cookies cuter and headed towards the kitchen to find Grace.

James watched her leave.

He couldn’t exactly say that he and Rose were close yet.

They could talk now, and their relationship had improved considerably, but there was still a certain distance between them.

He knew better than anyone why that distance existed.

He had created it himself.

James sighed.

Then, as though remembering something, he took out his phone and sent Ryan a message.

James: Are they planning to announce the engagement publicly at the dinner? Do you have a plan?

There was no reply for quite some time.

Eventually, only three words appeared.

Ryan: I don’t know.

James stared at the screen.

Then he immediately locked his phone.

“You old fox.”

Ryan was meticulous about everything.

Most of the time, it was impossible to tell what he was thinking, let alone predict what he intended to do.

He could make a decision without revealing even the slightest hint of his plans.

As for tomorrow’s dinner...

James glanced towards the kitchen.

The Mercer and Knight families were clearly preparing to make an announcement.

The only question was what kind.

And Rose...

No matter what she truly felt about Ryan, perhaps tomorrow would finally bring an end to this Chapter of her life.

*****

The Mercer family’s influence was considerable.
