“No, please do not say that, he shook his head, tears streaming down his face. “We can still work things out.”
“But why would I want to do that” I asked him. “Your affair with Seraphine lasted for months. You ended it only after enjoying it for a long time, after you had tasted every part of her, after you had fucked her in every position and every location you could think of. But my affair with Dominic is still very new. I have not enjoyed it to the full yet. Why are you trying to rush me? Why would I give it up?”
He stared at me like I had slapped him.
“I was not lying when I told you that Dominic fucks me so good,” I continued, my voice steady and deliberate. “Better than any other man has ever done. And right now, the only cock my body craves is Dominic’s.”
He flinched like the words had physical weight. “Why has your way of speaking become so crude?” he asked, his voice pleading. “Please do not break my heart any further by saying those hurtful words to me. Remember how we started, my love. Remember how happy we used to be. To err is human but to forgive is divine.”
I chuckled. “It is not a matter of forgiveness, my dear. My body longs for Dominic and that is all I care about right now. Besides, your mother and sister have always believed I was not good enough for you. Now you all have the perfect opportunity to find someone who meets their standards.”
“No.” He grabbed my hand. His grip was firm, not violent, but not letting go either. “I will never marry another woman. Not in this life. Why chase temporary pleasures with Dominic? It will not last. Dominic will never take you seriously. He will never marry you. But I am different. I have always cherished you and I always will.”
“Your definition of cherish leaves quite a lot to be desired,” I said. “But it does not matter either way because I have lost all interest in marriage entirely. All I care about right now is my career and enjoying my life. In that order.”
He still did not let go.
“Tell me what you want, then,” his voice broke slightly. “Anything. Name it and I will do it. Just do not leave. I will be lost without you, Celeste. I mean that.”
Fresh tears spilled down his face as he spoke, and before I could move or react, he went down to his knees in front of me, both arms coming around my waist and holding on with the specific desperation of a man who had run out of arguments and was betting everything on not letting go.
I tried to pry his hands away. He held tighter.
I tried again. Still nothing
Elizabeth had been watching all of this from across the room with the compressed expression of a woman sitting on something she could no longer contain. She got to her feet and came toward us.
“Julian,” she said sharply. “Get up. Get up right now. Do not kneel before a woman like this.”
He did not move.
She looked at me, and the look she gave me had years of accumulated judgment behind it.
