Chapter 164

He carried me out of the hotel placed me in the back seat of his car, and drove me to the hospital.

My doctor was waiting for us when we arrived. He rushed over as Felix carried me through the emergency room doors, his face a mask of professional concern, his eyes meeting mine for just a fraction of a second longer than necessary.

“What seems to be the problem?” he asked, his voice calm and measured..

“I do not know what is wrong with her,” Felix said, his voice tight with worry. “She was given a drug last night. An aphrodisiac. Someone injected her with it. She was fine this morning but now she says something is still wrong.”

The doctor nodded, his expression grave. “I will run some tests. Please, bring her this way.”

He led us to a private room where he took my blood sample, his movements quick and efficient, his face giving nothing away. Felix stood in the corner, his arms crossed, his jaw tight, watching everything with the intensity of a man who was trying to hold himself together.

The doctor left. Felix paced. I lay on the bed, my eyes half closed, my breathing deliberately shallow.

When the doctor returned, his face was grim. “This is terrible. A deadly drug was injected into her system. She could have died. Whoever did this to her is a very evil person who needs to be brought to justice.”

“What?” Felix’s voice cracked. “What do you mean?”

“Her organs are in danger. Her kidneys, her liver, her heart. Whoever injected this drug into her system did not intend for her to survive. I will do everything I can to help her, but it will take time.”

I had to bite the inside of my cheek to keep from smiling.

He gave me a drip, a bag of nothing but saline water, and left us alone in the room. Felix sat beside my bed, his hand holding mine, his thumb tracing circles on my skin. I pretended to sleep, my breathing slow and even, my face relaxed. And somewhere in the middle of my pretending, I actually did fall asleep.
