Chapter 172

JULIAN

I let the word hang in the air for a moment, and then I began to move closer, my eyes sweeping across each of them in turn, taking in the curve of their hips, the swell of their breasts beneath their thin shirts, the way their lips parted slightly as they watched me approach.

They were all beautiful, every single one of them, in that raw and desperate way that women looked when they had been stripped of everything except their own skin. Maya was still hiding behind the others, her eyes peeking out like a frightened animal, her braids falling across her face. Jasmine stood with her arms crossed, her jaw tight, her curly hair pulled back in a ponytail that made her look younger than she was, vulnerable despite the defiance in her stance. Tasha was trembling, her blonde hair hanging in messy strands around her pale face, her hands clasped together like she was praying.

But Scarlett. She was something else entirely. The red hair cascaded down her shoulders in waves that caught the dim light of the room and seemed to glow, and her blue eyes held mine without flinching, without backing down, like she had already accepted whatever was coming and had decided she would face it on her feet rather than on her knees. Her body was curved in all the right places, full breasts that strained against her top, a narrow waist that flared into hips made for gripping, legs that went on forever and then some. She was the most beautiful woman I had seen in a long time, and in that moment, I knew she was exactly what I needed.

“You,” I said, pointing at Scarlett. “Come with me.”

She turned and looked at the other girls, meeting each of their eyes in turn, and there was something passing between them, a silent farewell or a promise or both. Then she nodded at them and began to follow me.

I led her out of the room, my footsteps steady on the floor, her lighter ones padding behind me. I could feel her presence like a heat at my back, could smell the faint scent of her perfume, something floral and sweet that reminded me of Celeste in a way that made my chest ache.

I pushed open the door to another room, with a large bed in the center and a couch by the window and soft lighting that cast long shadows across the walls. I walked to the couch and sat down, leaning back, spreading my arms across the backrest like a king surveying his kingdom.
