“Grandma, I am grateful Tor what Imelda’s family did for you,” I said, keeping my voice measured. “But I will compensate them some other way.”

The old woman struck her palm on the table, the sound sharp and startling. “You agreed to marry Imelda. You have to keep your word, Dominic. If you break your promise to me I will never forgive you.”

“You know what? I do not have time for this.”

I turned and walked away, my footsteps heavy with frustration. I was so angry at myself. Back when I was still married to Seraphine, my grandmother and I used to talk often on the phone. She knew I was married, but the truth was she had not known about the marriage until after I discovered Seraphine’s infidelity.

When I told her about it, I made it clear that the marriage was not serious, that it was about to end in divorce. And that was when she told me about Imelda, about how good her family had been to her, and she asked if I would consider marrying Imelda.

Imelda had seen my picture and she liked me. At the time, I did not know that I would begin an affair with Celeste, that I would feel so strongly about her, that she would become the center of my world. So I had agreed to it, casually, without thinking much of it, because it did not matter then. But now it mattered. Now it mattered more than anything.

I exhaled, a long slow breath that did nothing to calm the storm inside me. I walked quietly to my bedroom and found Celeste sitting on the edge of the bed, her hands folded in her lap, her gaze fixed on some point on the floor. She looked up when I entered, and there was a distance in her eyes that I did not like.

“I wanted to take a shower but I don’t know what I will put on,” she said.

“I know,” I told her. “Celeste, about Imelda…”

She shook her head, her voice cutting through my words. “Dominic, your fiancée is already here. Why do you want me to stay?

You already have a fiancée, so what am I doing here?”

“Celeste, do not say that. You won’t leave tonight, right?”

“I have already agreed to stay, haven’t I? I just need to take a shower.”

“Hold on, let me give you something to wear.”

I went to my wardrobe and pulled out one of my shirts, a soft white cotton button-down that I knew would hang loosely on her frame. I handed it to her. “You can use this for now.”

“I will just shower and then go to bed.” She said, snatching the shirt from my hand.
