Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 246

Chapter 246

SERAPHINE

Let me tell you something about standing in a parking lot after watching your last shred of leverage get destroyed, it makes you want to break something expensive.

Kingsley had destroyed the only copy of Pat’s sex video, the one piece of ammunition I had that could actually hurt Celeste, and destroy Pat. He had crushed it in front of me like it was nothing more than a crumpled piece of paper.

I stood there with my hands balled into fists, my nails biting into my palms, the evening aír doing nothing to cool the rage simmering under my skin, and I thought about all the ways I was going to make Kingsley regret the day he decided to cross me His time would come. Everyone who had wronged me would get what was coming to them. I just had to be patient. I just had to

be smarter.

I was still standing there, frozen in place by my own fury, when I spotted Felix weaving between the parked cars with that look on his face, the one that said he had been searching for me and was about to make it my problem.

“There you are!” he called out as he jogged over, slightly out of breath. “Where did you go? I finished with Celeste, came back to the car, and you were gone. I’ve been looking everywhere.”

“I needed some air,” I said. “Just went for a little walk. I’m tired, Felix. I feel exhausted. I want to go home and sleep.”

“Okay, let me take you home.”

I wanted to tell him I would rather walk across broken glass than spend another minute in his company, but I had learned long ago that men like Felix responded best to weakness. They wanted to be needed. They wanted to be heroes. So I let him lead me to his car, let him open the passenger door for me, let him drive me through the city streets while I stared out the window and counted down the minutes until I could be alone.

When we pulled up to my house, I turned to him and said, “Thank you for everything, Felix. Really. You have been so kind to me. I think I can manage from here.”

“You don’t look so good, Seraphine.”

“I’m fine. Just tired. A good night’s sleep will fix everything.”

“I don’t think I should leave you alone like this.”

“Felix, really, I will be okay.”

“I’m not leaving you alone. Not in this state. What if something happens? What if you need someone? I’ll stay Just for a little while. Until you feel better.”

I looked at him, this fool who thought he was protecting me, and I considered my options. I could argue with him, waste more energy I did not have, or I could let him in and deal with him the way I dealt with people who overstayed their welcome I torced a small, grateful smile onto my face and said, “Fine. But only for a little while.”
