Chapter 336
I stood there, unable to blink.
Unable to speak.
Unable to understand why he looked nothing like a man preparing to destroy my heart.
The love I felt for him surged through me with such force that my chest physically hurt.
Why did it have to end like this?
I swallowed hard.
Dominic took one step toward me.
Then, to my complete shock, he dropped to one knee.
My eyes widened.
My hand flew to my mouth.
He reached inside his jacket and brought out a small velvet box.
It was midnight blue, exquisitely crafted, with a subtle gold clasp that caught the surrounding light. Even before he opened it, I knew whatever was inside had cost more than most people earned in a lifetime.
He opened the box.
The ring inside took my breath away.
A magnificent emerald-cut diamond rested at the centre of a delicate platinum band, flanked by two smaller diamonds that caught the golden garden lights and scattered them in tiny flashes across the clearing. It was elegant without being gaudy, timeless without being ordinary, and so breathtakingly beautiful that for several seconds I forgot how to breathe.
Dominic looked up at me.
“My Celeste, our love started like a game, but it turns out it was the best game I ever played. You are the most important person in my life, the reason for my existence, the very breath I take. I only live for the moments that I spend with you, and now I don’t want to waste another second of the time we have left.”
His voice softened.
“I love you more than words allow, and I want nothing more than to spend the rest of my life with you.”
My eyes burned.
Dominic’s gaze never left mine.
“Celeste Adams, would you do me the honour of being my wife?”
I stared at him.
The ring.
The flowers.
The lights.
1/2
The garden.
The man kneeling before me.
For several seconds, my mind refused to process what I was seeing.
Then every emotion I had spent the entire day suppressing broke through at once.
The fear.
The doubt.
The heartbreak I had been preparing myself to endure.
The desperate love I had tried to bury.
The relief.
The overwhelming realization that I had been wrong.
My hands flew over my face.
A sob escaped me.
Then another.
I began to cry so hard that I could barely breathe, the kind of helpless, uncontrollable crying that made my shoulders shake and left me unable to form a coherent sentence.
Dominic remained on one knee, looking up at me with a tenderness that made the tears come even harder.
