“Just doing my job, boss,” he returned.

After the call ended, I lay there feeling significantly less like the walls were closing in. Then her call came through, as though she had somehow known I needed to hear her voice

I picked up before the first ring had finished.

We talked. She sounded tired and unbothered in equal measure, which meant she was fine, which meant whatever had happened in that house she had handled.

After she hung up I lay there in the dark and felt the particular quiet of a room that had just had something good in it.

I slept.

The CEO called at seven in the morning.

“Check the trending news, Sir,” he said, without greeting. “Number one. Right now.”

I reached for my phone and opened the app.

Seraphine’s face looked back at me from approximately thirty different angles across the top of my feed.

I sat up and read.

Mrs. Seraphine Ford, scientist and founder of Ford Biosciences and wife of the country’s richest billionaire and chairman of Veil Holdings, Dominic Ford, is set to hold a press conference at two this afternoon. She aims to answer questions about her marriage, how she and her husband met and fell in love, and how he grew to become the number one billionaire in the country.

I scrolled to her personal page.

She had posted it herself. With a picture. Professionally taken, which meant she had planned this in advance. She was wearing the black dress from the party, and she was smiling the smile of a woman who believed she had already won.

I put the phone down.

“Seraphine,” I said to the empty room. “Desperate much?”

It was almost impressive. I had just revealed my face to the public for the first time, and she had taken a few hours to pivot from hiding on Julian’s arm to positioning herself as the beloved wife of the country’s most powerful man. She was claiming territory she had already signed away, in a document she had not even read, in front of an audience of millions.

I had to give it to her. The audacity was extraordinary.

My expression relaxed and I smiled slowly.

“Who told you that you were allowed to be Mrs. Ford in public, without my consent?

Sparrow called before I had finished the thought.

“Have you seen the trending news about you-know-who?”
