Chapter 86

JULIAN

My heart hammered against my ribs as I turned the key in the ignition. The engine roared to life and I slammed my foot on the accelerator, tires screeching against the pavement as I tore out of that club parking lot.

Images. Flashing through my mind like a slideshow from hell.

Celeste on her back. Celeste on her knees. Some man’s hands on her skin. Some man’s cock inside her.

I shook my head violently. No. No. No.

It had to be something else. Celeste would never cheat on me. She would never dare. That woman loved me. She worshipped the ground I walked on. We’d been through too much together for her to throw it all away on some random handyman.

My hands gripped the steering wheel so hard my knuckles went white. I took the turn into our street too fast, the car swerving before I corrected.

When I pulled into the driveway, I noticed it immediately. The guest room window was open. The curtain was billowing out. And there was no unfamiliar car parked anywhere.

I practically ripped the car door open and ran to the front entrance. The door was unlocked. I pushed through and the living room was empty, but I could hear my sister’s voice coming from upstairs.

I took the steps two at a time. The guest room door was locked.

I stopped at the threshold, knocked and the door was opened. I went into the room with my mother and

sister..

The bed was a disaster. Sheets tangled. Pillows thrown to the floor. The mattress was slightly off its frame, like there’d been a struggle. Or like there’d been sex. Rough sex.

My eyes scanned the room. Eventually, right on the sheets, a small glistening stain caught our attention.

I walked closer. Bent down.

It was cum. Fresh. Still wet enough to reflect the sunlight coming through the window.

My stomach dropped.

“Julian!” My mother’s voice came from behind me. “We couldn’t stop him. He just walked out and left.”

“I definitely heard moaning. Like… you know. Sex moans.” my sister said, standing beside me.

Celeste actually had the effrontery to lie that she woke up to find the cum on her bed. Even if such a thing was ever possible, the Celeste I knew would have immediately cleaned the sheets and replaced them, but she left them there.

Something wasn’t right.

I forced myself to think. To actually think instead of just reacting.

Celeste was a lot of things right now. Annoying. Disrespectful. Arrogant with her new money. But she wasn’t stupid. She wasn’t reckless. And she definitely wasn’t the type to fuck another man in our own house with my mother and sister in the next room, leaving evidence behind like she wanted to be caught.

No decent, intelligent woman would cheat that obviously and be that nonchalant about it.

Which meant…

A slow realization crept over me.

She was acting.

This was a performance. All of it. The handyman. The locked door. The moans. The cum on the bed. She wanted me to see this. She wanted me to react. She’d planned this whole scene with that man just to make me send my mother and sister away.

My jaw tightened.

Clever. Really fucking clever, Celeste.

But why should everything go her way? Especially with this new, insufferable attitude of hers. She thought she could manipulate me into doing what she wanted? She thought she could stage a fake affair and I’d just roll over?

“If she truly wanted to cheat,” I muttered to myself, “she wouldn’t have done it at home with my mom and

sister right there.”

“What did you say?” Riley asked.

“Nothing.”

Celeste was leaving. She refused to stop and that was why I warned her that there would be consequences if she walked away.

She was at the bottom of the stairs at this time, already dressed in a chic blue dress, her hair damp but still falling in perfect waves, a pair of designer sunglasses perched on her head. She had her handbag over her shoulder and her car keys in her hand.

She was still leaving.

“Celeste,” I called out again, my voice sharp.

She didn’t even look up.

“Celeste, I need to talk to you right now.”
