Chapter 93
“I’m still waiting for the part where Dominic comes into this.”
I scoffed. “You’re such a selfish bitch. You only care about yourself.”
“I just got back from the hospital, Julian. I have a lot on my mind. Can you just go straight to the point?”
I leaned forward. “My sister seems to think the man who came to see Celeste was Dominic. She said he wore a beard when he came in, but when he was leaving, he’d taken it off. She found his face familiar. And then she saw a picture of him online. She recognized him without a doubt.”
Seraphine stared at me. Then she laughed. It was a short, humorless sound.
“Hold on. What are you trying to say? That my husband snuck into your house, into your guest room, to have sex with your wife, while your mother and sister were in the house?”
“That’s exactly what I’m saying.”
She shook her head. “No. That’s not possible.”
“And why is it not possible? Are you saying my wife isn’t attractive enough?”
“That’s not the point.”
“Then what is the point? Because I’m literally going crazy here. If Dominic comes near my wife in any way, I will destroy him. I don’t care that he’s your husband.”
She got to her feet. “Listen. Dominic may be a lot of things, but he’s not that kind of man. He has pride. He’s different. He’s an outstanding man. In all the years of our marriage, the only complaint I’ve ever had about Dominic was that he didn’t have money. He wasn’t lacking in any other way. If a man like Dominic wanted to have an affair, he wouldn’t go to a married woman’s house and sneak into a guest room. It doesn’t sound like something he would do.”
I wanted to argue, but she kept going.
“Besides, you already said it yourself. Celeste and your mother and your sister, there’s bad blood between them. What if your sister and your mother just made it all up? What if they want to ruin your marriage or turn you against Celeste? They could have talked about it and decided to pick my husband’s face and pretend he was the one who was there.”
I opened my mouth, but she wasn’t done.
“You never got to see him. You don’t have cameras in your home. You were the one who decided not to have cameras because of our affair, remember?”
I sat back. She had a point. A very good point.
“That actually makes me feel a whole lot better,” I admitted. “I was going crazy. I knew only you would be able to talk some sense into me.”

“Good.”
“But that still leaves the problem. Celeste brought another man into my house. Whether it was Dominic or not, my wife was locked in a room with a man I didn’t know, doing God knows what.”
Seraphine sighed. “I get it. When I couldn’t reach Dominic initially and Celeste was able to go into his office, I got so upset. So jealous. I ended up threatening her, telling her to stay away from my husband and all that.
But while I was in the hospital, I had time to think. I think Dominic is just very, very busy this period. He doesn’t have time for all these petty things. I’ve been with him for years, and no matter how far I go down memory lane, I just can’t picture him doing something like this. He’s a loyal man. A straightforward man.
The only thing he ever hid from me was his status. And back then, he kept telling me to give him a little more time. That he was going to give me everything. Buy me anything I needed in this world. And now that dream is finally being realized.”
I snorted. “Dominic must be really busy, then.”
“He is.”
“Well, I don’t care about that.” I got to my feet. “If Dominic wasn’t really the one who came to my house, then Celeste brought a different man. And I need to find out who.”
“What are you going to do?”
“I know her. She’s not the type to cheat and be so nonchalant about it. This is all an act. But still, I feel really uneasy. I think I know what I have to do.”
I headed for the door.
“Thank you for your time,” I said. “And if you get really lonely, don’t forget to give me a call.”
She didn’t respond to that.
I walked out of her house and toward my car. The air was cool, but I barely felt it. My mind was racing. Seraphine had calmed me down about the Dominic thing, but the bigger problem was still there. Celeste had brought a man into our house. Whether it was an act or not, whether it was Dominic or some random stranger, my wife had been alone in a room with another man while my mother and sister were in the house.
I needed to know what she was up to.
I pulled out my phone and called a different contact. A private investigator I’d used before. A man who knew how to follow someone without being seen.
“I need you to tail someone,” I said when he picked up.
“Who?”
“My wife. Celeste Fisher. I need to know where she goes, who she meets, what she does. Especially if

she meets with any man. Do you understand?”
