Underwater: The Silent Luna novel Chapter 127

Chapter 127

Pride.

Not shallow pride. Not possession in the ugly sense. Something deeper. Fiercer. He was proud that she was his. Proud that she chose him. Proud that she had fought for him with that level of instinct and devotion. Proud that under all the softness and silence the world used to dismiss her, there was this.

Echo stirred a couple of times while he watched.

Not like the previous day. Nothing as sharp as the surge he felt in the woods when he touched Nightshade and his claws came out. This time it was quieter. More like a presence shifting in the background to let him know he was not alone. I’m here. That was what it felt like. Not a command, not a demand. A presence. A reminder. Enough to keep Ethan steady. Enough to keep that small flame of hope alive.

He accepted it without reaching too greedily for more.

By afternoon, Camila Richardson arrived.

She came in a van, and behind her came an ambulance carrying three medical staff. A doctor and two nurses. Ethan noticed all of that from the cabin window before they were properly welcomed in, and somehow the sight of so much preparation made the whole thing feel more serious than it already had. Rashel was asked to show the doctor and the rest of the staff to the cabin allocated to them. Ethan watched the movement, the settling, the quiet efficiency of it. Then something else stood out to him. Camila had not come with her mate.

He noticed that because he remembered the offer he gave. As Alpha, he had left that choice with her. She could come with her mate if she wished. She had not taken that option. Ethan did not ask why. He chose not to pry. Some things were not his business unless they became his problem, and this was not one of them. If she wanted to travel alone, that was her matter.

Keith and Elaine picked that exact time to head into town for groceries. There was food in the pantry, yes, but most of the perishables were running low, and now there were more mouths to feed. Guests. Staff. Movement. The cabin had gone from being a quiet retreat into something temporarily fuller. They needed supplies, So Keith and Elaine left, promising not to be long.

That left Ethan and Meadow in their own cabin waiting for the doctor to finish settling in.

The waiting made the air feel tight,

Both of them wanted the sessions to start immediately. Meadow even more than she could comfortably show. She sat there carrying two feelings at once. Nervousness and excitement. Hope and fear. The possibility that this might work made her pulse jump in uneasy little bursts, but she was also trying not to lean too far into hope. She had lived too long in disappointment to do that carelessly. If the therapy failed, she needed to survive that too. So she prepared herself the way wounded people often do. By hoping quietly and bracing loudly.

Ethan noticed all of it.

He did not say much about it because he was wound up in his own way too. Not only for her. For himself as well. If this woman was good, if she knew what she was doing, maybe Meadow would speak. Maybe Nightshade would come through properly. Maybe Echo would get stronger. Maybe his own body wou
