Chapter 143
The following morning, Camila left the cabin early to head into town, but there was nothing light or ordinary about the trip. It should have been a simple thing. A doctor going to arrange a scan. A therapist following up on a medical concern. A woman doing her job. That was how it should have felt. Clean. Professional. Routine. Instead, every step of it felt heavy. Wrong. Dangerous ina way that made her stomach uneasy from the moment she stepped out.
She told herself again what the plan was, because repeating it made it feel smaller and more manageable, even though it was neither. She would get into town. She would book a CT scan and blood work for Alpha Ethan. She would arrange everything so that when the day came, he would only have to come in, get himself checked, and return to the cabin without too much fuss. Simple Efficient. Quiet. That was the idea. The less time Ethan spent in town asking questions or drawing attention to himself, the better. If there was really something wrong with him beyond the obvious, then the matter needed to be handled with care.
But care was exactly what frightened her.
Because the more she thought about Ethan’s case, the less it felt like a mere medical issue and the more it felt like a trap she had stumbled into. If silver was still in his spine, then the doctors who had attended to him during and after the accident had not simply made a mistake. They had deliberately left some piece lodged inside him to poison his system slowly. Deliberately. Camila could not stop circling that thought. Doctors were not careless with silver. Not in a body like his. Not in a spine. Not in a case so serious. If it was there, it was there for a reason, and that reason could only be ugly.
She tried to reason it through, but every path led somewhere dark.
What would be the gain? Why would anyone do it unless someone had asked them to? Unless someone had paid them or pressured them or ordered them? If that was the truth, then Ethan’s accident might not have been an accident at all. Or maybe it had started as one and then become something worse in the hands of people willing to take advantage of his vulnerability. Camila did not know which possibility was more terrifying. One suggested deliberate sabotage from the beginning. The other suggested opportunistic cruelty after the fact. Neither made her feel any safer.
And if silver was not in his spine?
That possibility sat even colder in her chest.
Because if the spine itself was clean, then someone else had to be introducing silver into Ethan’s system little by little, feeding it to him somehow, keeping his wolf dormant, keeping his body from healing the way it should. That meant his enemies were closer than he knew. Closer than all of them knew. Close enough to touch what went into his body. Close enough to poison him without raising immediate suspicion. Close enough to watch the damage happen slowly and call it misfortune.
Either option was bad. She knew that much.
Either option meant Ethan had enemies still working against him.
Either option meant the Alpha was not only wounded. He was under attack in a way no one had fully understood.
And now Camila had made herself part of it.

Chapter 143
That was the thought that kept rising above the others. Not because she cared more about herself than Ethan. She did not. But because fear was honest, and hers was growing fast. She had started by treating Meadow. That was already complicated enough. Then the issue of the Luna had deepened into something vile, and now Ethan too seemed wrapped in secrets and sabotage. Camila had not asked for any of this. She had not gone looking for danger. She was a therapist, not a fighter, not an investigator, not a woman used to standing near people powerful enough to attract this kind of malice. And yet here she was, right in the middle of something that felt bigger and uglier every time she thought of it.
