"You should be careful with this for now," he said.
"I’m okay. It’s okay," she said. "I forget myself sometimes." Her good hand came up and touched his face. "Baby...I’m okay."
His eyes closed briefly. The darkness was always closer than he wanted it to be, counting the damage David had left behind. "The doctor said you could have it fixed in your second trimester...If you cannot hold on for that long..."
"Luca, it’s fine. It is just for a couple more weeks. The damned thing itches sometimes, but I’m fine." Vee held his jaw between her palm and fingers until he looked directly at her. "Look at me."
He did. Her eyes were steady.
"I’m strong enough."
"Oh yes, you are," Luca said, smiling. He glanced at the vanity, where her bottles, serums, and other sacred female mysteries were arranged in careful little rows. "Are you done with your..." He gestured vaguely. "I don’t even know what to call it."
"Mama’s got to stay pretty. So do not mock what you do not know."
Luca leaned down, brushing his nose against hers. "Mama is always pretty." His smile turned wicked, and before she could prepare herself for the trouble in his expression, he added, "That said, you are done for tonight."
"Luca..."
He lifted her off the ground, placed her on the bed, dropped beside her and kissed her shoulder, his mouth lingering over her warm skin. "I miss you at work," he murmured.
Vee’s fingers moved through his damp hair. "I know."
Commissioned had become strange without her. He liked taking a break from work for a minute and knowing that she was there, next door, beside him, where she belonged. Either that or arguing with him, reminding her what his men needed and making the place feel less like a heartless kingdom.
"I just have to take it easy until we are sure the bun in the oven is going to stick," she said.
"It will stick," Luca said. His voice left no room for argument. He shifted lower on the bed and placed a kiss on her stomach. "You will stick," he whispered.
Vee looked down at him. He could be darkness to everyone else, but with her, he became something so devoted it hurt to witness. "I love you."
He looked up at her. "I am obsessed with you both."
She laughed quietly, then reached for him. "Come here, Daddy."
Luca’s eyes darkened instantly. The change was so quick she almost laughed again. One little word, and the man lost himself on the spot. He moved over her, covering her body with his, careful not to put his full weight on her. His forearm braced beside her head, his other hand sliding along her thigh.
"I love it when you call me Daddy," he said against her mouth. "Makes my dick hard."
Vee’s smile turned wicked. "Daddy sure looks good on Mama."
"Damn straight." He kissed her then, deep and hungry. His hand moved to the hem of her nightdress, and he yanked the stupid thing off her.

Valentina looked like a woman dazed out of her mind as she tried to understand what Voss had just said.
The world moved around her as if nothing had happened. People walked past with shopping bags. Cars slid along the street..
