Nothing happened that night.
At first light, Jared left Shadowfell City with Gwendolyn and Master Veridian. Caiden went with them.
A group of elite demonic cultivators followed far behind under Caiden's command.
Their auras were hidden so well that they seemed to have vanished into the wilderness. They moved like venomous snakes under cover, silent and ready.
If anything changed ahead, they could strike immediately.
Soul Burial Valley was about five hundred miles from Shadowfell City.
It was a long, narrow stretch of black cliffs. The walls on both sides rose high into the clouds, bare except for dark-red moss clinging to the stone.
A twisting path ran through the valley floor.
Gravel covered the road. Broken arcane implements and beast bones lay scattered along the sides. The air carried the smell of rot and death.
It was indeed a perfect place to bury someone.
Jared walked in front at an unhurried pace, calm enough to look unaware.
Gwendolyn remained beside him, scanning the cliffs with her icy-blue eyes.
Master Veridian trailed behind with his back hunched, looking like an ordinary old wanderer. Only the sharp light deep in his cloudy eyes showed he was waiting for trouble.
After roughly six miles, several dozen figures emerged from behind a huge boulder ahead.
Corvin Skyreach stood in front.
He wore red-gold robes, and heat rolled from his body. His red-gold eyes burned like two flames as he stared at Jared.
Behind him were Ronan Thunderfall, the lord of Holy Light Palace, and leaders from more than ten celestial forces.
All of them released frightening pressure.
Twenty or thirty cultivators above Golden Immortal Level Six.
Three Golden Immortal Level Eight experts.
Seven or eight Golden Immortal Level Seven experts.
A lineup like that could sweep away most forces in the Nineteenth Firmament.
"Jared, we meet again."
Corvin's voice was cold, as if scraped out of an ice cellar. "You did not expect me to be waiting here, did you?"
Jared looked at him calmly.
He even stretched, rolled his neck, and let his joints crack.
"Clan Chief Skyreach, you brought all these people into Soul Burial Valley just to wait for me? Are you here to die?"
Corvin's face shifted slightly.
"Die? Jared, you think too highly of yourself. You killed Blackraven, and now you believe you can be arrogant before all of us? This valley will be your grave."
Ronan Thunderfall stood behind him, lightning crackling around his body.
He looked Jared up and down and sneered.
"Golden Immortal Level One? You dragged me all the way here for this?"
The lord of Holy Light Palace said nothing.
He only watched Jared, light shifting deep in his eyes.
Jared swept his gaze over the celestials.
A faint smile touched his mouth.
"Clan Chief Skyreach, before you brought everyone here to ambush me, did you consider another possibility?"
Corvin narrowed his eyes.
"What possibility?"
"That you had stepped into an ambush yourself."
Corvin's brows snapped together.
"What are you talking about?"
Jared did not answer him.
