Chapter 622-1
FAYE
By the time dinner was over, Alexander still hadn’t come out of the office. I had noticed his absence throughout the meal, although I hadn’t expected him to suddenly appear halfway through dinner. Still, I couldn’t help but think about him.
Martha said that he didn’t eat anything before he left in the morning. That thought stayed with me as I looked at the dining table after everyone had finished eating.
I turned toward Martha, who was still nearby.
“Please take Alpha Alexander’s dinner to him in the office.”
Martha looked at me.
For a moment, she didn’t say anything.
Her eyes shifted toward the kitchen, then back toward me.
“To the office, Luna?”
“Yes,” I said.
She hesitated again.
I already knew why. Alexander had not asked for his dinner, and Martha was probably wondering whether walking into his office with a tray of food while he was working was a good idea. She knew what he was like when he was busy, and she probably didn’t want to be the person who interrupted him unnecessarily.
Martha nodded. “Yes, Luna.”
She turned toward the kitchen and went to collect the tray.
I remained where I was for a few moments, watching her leave. I wasn’t particularly concerned about how Alexander would react. At worst, he would tell her that he wasn’t hungry, and she would bring the food back.
There was no reason to make more of it than that.
When Martha returned with the tray, she arranged everything carefully and carried it in both hands.
“I’ll take it to him now, Luna.”

I stayed behind for a few more minutes, mostly because I wasn’t in any hurry to go upstairs. Once I was certain everything had been settled, I finally pushed my chair back and stood, simply heading upstairs to our chambers.
The house had become considerably quieter compared to earlier in the day. Most of the staff had already finished their work in the main areas, and the sounds coming from the kitchen had faded into the background.
I reached the stairs and began walking up.
I had only gone a few steps when I heard voices coming from the direction of the office.
I recognized Martha’s voice first.
“Luna asked me to bring your dinner…”
I slowed.
There was a brief pause.
“I’m not hungry. Take it back.”
I stopped completely. I hadn’t intended to listen to their conversation, but I couldn’t exactly pretend I hadn’t heard him.
Martha spoke again. Her voice was quieter this time, and although I couldn’t make out every word, I could tell she was trying to persuade him to eat in her own way.
Perhaps she reminded him that he hadn’t eaten anything all day.
Whatever she said seemed to have irritated him.
“I said I’m not hungry.”
His voice was sharper now. I stood on the stairs for another moment.
There was silence… Then Alexander spoke again.
“Martha, leave.”
I didn’t wait to hear anything else. I resumed walking up the stairs. Martha had done what I asked her to do, and Alexander had made his decision. If he didn’t want the food, then that
was the end of it.
I was already heading toward the chambers when I heard Martha behind me.

“Luna.”
I stopped and turned around. Martha was coming toward me, still holding the tray.
I looked at her.
