Chapter 637

ALEXANDER

When I came back from my workout, I went straight to my chambers. My body already felt considerably better than it had when I woke up, although the soreness in my neck had stubbornly refused to disappear completely.

The workout had helped more than I expected. When I first woke up, I had felt as though I had been hit by a truck. My head had been pounding, my neck had been stiff, and every movement seemed to remind me of the terrible decision Cole and I had made the previous night.

Sleeping on a couch after drinking beer had never sounded like a reasonable idea if you actually considered it. But that was the thing… I hadn’t considered it.

I closed the door behind me and walked farther into the room. The quietness of my chambers immediately settled around me. After the noise and activity of the morning, the

silence was almost welcome.

I picked up my phone from where I had left it earlier and checked the screen. There was a missed call from Faye.

A small smile immediately appeared on my face.

I didn’t hesitate to call her back.

She answered after a few rings.

“Finally.”

I smiled faintly at the sound of her voice. “Good morning to you too.”

“I’m upset right now,” Faye complained. “I called you, and you didn’t pick up.”

“I know. I’m sorry.”

“There is no way you weren’t with your phone,” she said.

I could actually laugh at that moment. I wasn’t used to Faye getting all worked up over a missed phone call.

I shook my head even though she couldn’t see me. “I actually wasn’t with my phone.”

“You weren’t?” she asked.

Chapter 637

“No. I went for a workout very early.”

There was a brief pause before she responded.

“Oh.”

Her tone immediately softened. “I didn’t know you were out that early.”

“I was.”

“And you didn’t take your phone with you?”

“I didn’t.”

Faye sighed. “Fine. I forgive you.”

I smiled. “That easily?”

“Don’t get too comfortable. I’m still slightly offended,” Faye said.

I chuckled and walked over to the bed. “Noted.”

I sat down on the edge of the mattress and leaned back slightly.

It was one of the things I had come to appreciate about talking to Faye. Even when neither of

us was saying anything, the silence never felt awkward.

Then she spoke again.

“I just wanted to hear from you before I started my day.”

Something about hearing her say that made me feel unexpectedly good.

I leaned back against the headboard and let out a quiet breath. There was something

comforting about knowing that she had wanted to hear my voice simply because she wanted

I smiled to myself.

“How are you doing?” I asked.

“I’m fine,” Faye replied. “What about you?”

I glanced down at myself before letting out a quiet sigh.

“My entire body hurts.”

She immediately laughed. “Why?”

“My neck especially.”

“What did you do?”

I rubbed the back of my neck instinctively. Even that small movement reminded me of how stiff it still was.

I laughed. “I was foolish enough to indulge Cole last night.”

There was a short pause before Faye laughed again.

“Cole?”

“Yes.”

“What did you two do?”

I ran my palm down my face. “Nothing particularly intelligent.”

“Now I’m very interested.”

I could already hear the amusement in her voice.

“We drank beer.”

Faye laughed. “Okay… That doesn’t sound too bad.”

“It wasn’t until we decided to sleep on the couches.”

Her laughter stopped for a second.

“You did what?”

“We spent the night on the couches after drinking beer.”

I could hear the disbelief in her silence before she finally spoke.

“You and Cole actually slept on the couch?”

“Unfortunately.”

She laughed again. “I can’t believe you.”

The memory of waking up on the couch came rushing back to me. My neck had been bent at an uncomfortable angle, one arm had gone completely numb, and my head had felt like it was splitting in two.

“But if Cole is involved,” Faye continued, “I suppose anything is possible.”

“Exactly.”

I smiled as I thought about it. I should have known better than to agree to whatever idea Cole had come up with… But the truth was that I actually needed that moment.

Cole always knew when to show up. He knew when I was down and exactly how to make it better in his own way.

I rubbed the back of my neck again.

“I woke up with a headache and barely any feeling left in my neck.”

Faye laughed harder.

“That’s what you get. You should have known better,” she said.

“I should have.”

“And you still went along with him,” she said.
