Chapter 638

SILVER HOLLOW

FAYE

After I ended the call with Alexander, I remained seated on the edge of my bed for a few moments, looking down at my phone with a small smile on my face.

I could still hear his voice in my head, particularly the amusement in it when he admitted that he had been foolish enough to spend the night drinking with Cole and sleeping off on the

couch.

It was strange how something so ordinary could make me feel closer to him, especially when I was away from home and surrounded by people I had not seen in months.

Eventually, I set my phone aside and stood.

I had somewhere to be.

I walked over to my wardrobe and opened it, looking through the clothes I had brought with me. I wasn’t going to the council meeting to participate in anything official. I simply wanted to greet the council members, especially the elders, and formally let them know that I had

returned home for a visit.

Even though I was certain they already knew I was here.

There was almost nothing that happened in Silver Hollow without everybody hearing about it eventually.

Still, I believed it was important for me to make the visit myself.

I had once been a member of that council. I might no longer live in Silver Hollow, but I hadn’t simply abandoned my place here. I had left for a reason. I had left to honor the alliance that had been built by the very council in the first place.

I eventually chose a dress from the wardrobe and slipped it on.

It was a deep burgundy dress that fell just below my knees, fitted neatly through the waist before loosening slightly toward the skirt. The fabric was soft and elegant without being overly formal, and the sleeves reached just above my elbows. The neckline was modest, and the simplicity of the dress made it appropriate for a council gathering without making me look as though I were trying to turn the occasion into something more important than it was.

I fastened a thin belt around my waist and slipped on a pair of simple black heels. I added

small gold earrings and a delicate bracelet before standing in front of the mirror.

I studied my reflection for a moment.

I looked composed enough. That was all I needed. I wasn’t going there to make a statement.

The truth was that I also saw the council meeting as an opportunity. There was something happening in Silver Hollow.

I didn’t know exactly what it was, but I had noticed enough signs to know that something was wrong. And after what Jason and Sage had talked about last night, I had become more

curious.

None of this felt normal. The problem was that I couldn’t simply ask Sage, and I couldn’t ask

Jason either.

There was already an understanding between the two of them that I wasn’t supposed to know about whatever was happening.

I didn’t know the details of the agreement, but after overhearing Jason warning Sage not to tell me about the crisis, I knew enough.

My parents were another possibility. I could ask them… eventually.

But I didn’t want to approach them without having some idea of what I was looking for first.

If I could get information from someone else at the council, I could compare it with whatever my parents eventually told me. If the stories matched, I would know I was probably getting

the truth.

If they didn’t, then I would have an entirely different problem.

I picked up my perfume and applied a small amount before placing it back on the dresser.

Then I checked my reflection one last time.

My hair was neatly styled, and my dress was in place.

I glanced at my watch, and my eyes widened slightly. I was already running late.

“Great.”

I grabbed my phone and slipped it into my purse before leaving the room. I was halfway down the hallway when I stopped.

I should probably let Sage know where I was going. I turned around and headed toward the Alpha’s chambers.

It wasn’t far, and I figured she would still be there.

When I reached the door, I knocked, but there was no response. I waited for a few seconds before knocking again.

“Sage? Are you in there?”

Still nothing.

I frowned. Maybe she had already gone to the council hall herself. That would make sense.

I was about to turn around when I heard a sound from inside.

I paused. A moment later, the door opened, and I stopped. Jason stood on the other side.

He was shirtless and wearing a pair of black sweatpants that sat low on his waist. His hair was slightly damp, as though he had recently showered, and his expression was completely

relaxed.

For a second, I simply stared at him. I had automatically assumed that Jason would already

be at the council hall.

Apparently, I was wrong.

I immediately looked away and shifted my attention toward the hallway.

“I was looking for Sage,” I said.

A quiet chuckle came from behind me. Apparently, Jason found my reaction funny.

“Faye, don’t act like that with me,” he said.

I glanced back at him. Jason’s expression was amused.

“It’s not as though you’ve never seen me like this.”

I hesitated.

He wasn’t exactly wrong. Jason had never been particularly concerned about walking around the pack house without a shirt. Most of the male wolves did the same thing, especially after training or returning from a run.

It wasn’t unusual.

Even the staff members probably knew exactly what Jason looked like without a shirt. If someone asked them to describe him, they could probably do it without thinking.

So there was nothing particularly inappropriate about seeing him shirtless.

The only thing that made this feel different was where I was standing. He was inside his chambers, and I was standing at the entrance.

That was the only reason I had looked away. I wasn’t embarrassed by his appearance. I was simply trying to be respectful.

I didn’t explain any of that. There was no reason to. Instead, I looked at him again.

“Is Sage inside?”

Jason didn’t answer immediately.

He simply stared at me.

When he still didn’t say anything, I was beginning to wonder if Sage was even there.
