I stood outside Jason’s office for a few seconds after Faye walked away. I watched her disappear down the hallway, and I couldn’t help thinking about how strange the entire day had been.

Faye had barely been back in Silver Hollow for a few hours, yet somehow, Jason had already managed to put me in a position where I was questioning his intentions.

Earlier that day, I had walked towards our chambers and found Jason standing in the doorway without a shirt, wearing nothing but pants.

Faye had been standing in front of him, and although she had looked a bit awkward, Jason hadn’t seemed particularly bothered by the situation. I saw the way he had been staring at her.

At the time, I had decided not to make anything of it. There was no reason to assume anything simply because Jason had been shirtless in our chambers when Faye happened to come looking for me.

But now Faye had just walked out of his office even after they had already attended the meeting together.

I pushed the thought aside and opened the door.

Jason was still behind his desk, although he didn’t appear particularly interested in the documents scattered in front of him. He looked up when I entered, and I closed the door behind me.

“I just saw Faye leaving your office,” I said.

Jason’s expression changed slightly. He leaned back in his chair and released a quiet breath before looking at me.

“She found out from the meeting because the council insisted she stay,” Jason said.

I already understood what he meant, but I waited for him to explain.

“She knows about the situation with North Ridge,” Jason said. “And now she’s doing exactly what I was afraid she would do.”

“She wants to help?” I asked.

“Then let her,” I said.

The words came out naturally, and Jason stared at me as though he hadn’t expected that

response.

I walked farther into the room and moved toward the chair opposite his desk.

“I don’t understand why you’re making this into a problem. This is what we need.”

Jason shook his head.

“Sage, you don’t understand what you’re suggesting.”

“I understand perfectly,” I said.

I sat down and crossed one leg over the other.

“I’ve been thinking about this for a while. This wasn’t supposed to happen because you asked her for help. That would have defeated the entire point,” I said.

Jason remained quiet, so I continued.

“Think about it. If you go to Faye and tell her Silver Hollow is in trouble, then she knows you needed her. If she goes to Alexander afterward, it becomes a favor from Blood Crescent to Silver Hollow. You know how that would make you feel,” I explained.

Jason’s expression tightened, but he didn’t deny it.

“Alexander would know that Silver Hollow needed help,” I continued. “You would know that he knew. Faye would know that she had intervened on our behalf. Sooner or later, someone would feel as though something was owed.”

I paused for a moment before looking directly at him.

“But that’s not what happened. Faye found out on her own,” Jason said.

“Exactly,” I said. “That is exactly what I mean.”

I had thought about the possibility long before today. I knew Faye well enough to know that once she discovered something was seriously wrong with Silver Hollow, she wouldn’t simply walk away from it. She cared enough to intervene when she believed people were in trouble.

That was the part I had been counting on.

“If she chooses to help now, it’s because she decided to,” I explained. “Nobody asked her.
