“Yes.”
“Then how is that any different?”
I sighed.
“Because you didn’t ask him. How hard is that to understand?” I asked.
Jason didn’t respond.

“You didn’t go to him,” I continued. “You didn’t admit that Silver Hollow needs him. You didn’t put yourself in a position where he could look at you and believe that you came to him because you couldn’t handle your own problems.”
I saw irritation flash across his face.
That was exactly the point.
“You know that’s what you’re worried about,” I said quietly. “Not whether the help would be
useful.”
Jason looked away.
“This is Silver Hollow, Jason. We’re not discussing something insignificant. We’re talking about possible war here.”
“I know what we’re dealing with,” Jason said.
“Then why are you still refusing to see the opportunity?”
He looked back at me.
“I don’t need Faye to fix my pack’s problems, Sage. I can find my way around all of this.”
I studied him for a moment.
There it was again. The same pride that had been standing in the way of everything else. He was still thinking about finding a way when we didn’t have time or resources on our side.
“This isn’t about Faye fixing anything,” I said.
“That’s exactly what it would become,” Jason said.
“No, it wouldn’t. Trust me.”

“You’re still thinking about this as though accepting help means surrendering control. It doesn’t. Nobody is asking you to hand Silver Hollow over to Blood Crescent. Nobody is asking Alexander to become involved in your leadership. Nobody is asking him to send warriors here or dictate what you do.”
I paused.
“We need resources. They have resources, and Faye is offering them on her own. That’s all.”
Jason’s fingers tapped once against the desk. I could tell he was thinking, but I also knew him well enough to know that thinking didn’t necessarily mean changing his mind.
“You had this planned all along, didn’t you?” he asked eventually.
I didn’t deny it.
“I had considered it.”
“Without telling me,” he said.
“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want you to interfere.”
His eyebrows lifted.
I held his gaze.
“If I had told you, you would have found a reason to stop her,” I said.
He leaned back and sighed.
“I think the situation we’re in requires people to be practical,” I said.
Jason gave a humorless smile.
“I knew what she would do once she learned the truth. All I had to do was encourage her to come home. Everything else happened on its own,” I said.
I hadn’t forced Faye to do anything. I hadn’t gone to her and filled her head with stories about how badly Silver Hollow needed Blood Crescent. I hadn’t begged her to intervene. I had
simply allowed her to see what was happening.
After that, the decision belonged to her.
“She made her own choice,” I said. “Don’t ruin things.”
Jason looked at me for several seconds.

“And you think I should accept.”
“I think you should stop looking at this as an insult,” I said.
His expression hardened.

“Jason, I’m not asking you to like it. I’m asking you to understand what it could do for us.”
He remained quiet.
“Silver Hollow doesn’t need another argument. We don’t need another meeting where everyone sits around the table discussing how bad things are getting. We need resources.”
Jason looked down at his desk.
“And Faye has offered us a way to get them without us having to ask. Please, accept it,” I said.
I waited.
He finally lifted his eyes.
“I already said no to her.”
I stared at him. For a moment, I genuinely thought I had misunderstood him.
“You already turned her down?” I asked in surprise.
“Yes.”
I slowly shook my head.
“Why?”
“I don’t need her help.”
I exhaled through my nose. I had expected resistance, but hearing him say it so plainly still frustrated me. It seemed like I had been talking to myself all along… He hadn’t been listening at all to anything I had been saying.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” I said.
I stood from the chair.
