Instead, he was escalating.

That suggested that the missing shipment was merely the opening he needed.

“Jason should have figured that out already,” I said. “If he’s smart, he’ll understand that Conrad isn’t really interested in the shipment anymore. He wants to put Silver Hollow in a position where they have no choice but to accept whatever terms he gives them.”

Faye sighed.

“That is the problem,” she said.

I frowned.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Silver Hollow isn’t exactly in a position to push back,” Faye said.

I sat up a little straighter.

That wasn’t what I had expected her to say.

“Listen, if Jason can refund Conrad’s money, then there is no ground for Conrad to make a move against Silver Hollow,” I said.

I spoke slowly, working through the situation as I saw it.

“That way, the transaction is settled. North Ridge gets its money back, and Silver Hollow accepts responsibility for the failed delivery. If Conrad still decides to attack after that, then Jason has every right to take drastic measures against North Ridge as well,” I said.

I paused.

“It’s that simple,” I added.

“No, Alexander. It isn’t that simple,” Faye said.

Her voice was quiet, but there was enough weight behind it to make me stop.

“Silver Hollow is not what it used to be,” she said.

I listened.

“Right now, they can barely hold things together,” she continued. “They are struggling with food and weapons, and they’re already dealing with problems inside the pack. They are trying

to prepare for a possible war while barely having enough resources to maintain themselves.”

I stared at the desk.

Faye continued speaking.

“They can’t simply push back against North Ridge.”

I was quiet for a moment.

The picture she was painting was very different from the one I had initially imagined.

I had been looking at the situation from the perspective of two packs engaged in a dispute. From that perspective, my solution was straightforward. Refund the money, settle the failed transaction, and if Conrad still wanted to escalate, respond accordingly.

But if Silver Hollow was already struggling, then the equation changed.

A pack could only afford to take a stand when it had enough resources to withstand the

consequences.

If Silver Hollow barely had enough food and weapons for itself, then even a defensive conflict could cripple it.

I remained silent and thought about what she had told me.

North Ridge wasn’t an insignificant pack.

Conrad probably wasn’t making empty threats.

And Silver Hollow was apparently far weaker than I had realized. How did I not know about it?

And if the crisis was truly this serious, how had it reached this point without becoming common knowledge among the surrounding packs?

Perhaps Silver Hollow had been deliberately keeping the extent of its problems quiet.

I rubbed my thumb against the edge of the desk.

“Faye, how long has this been going on?”

“Long enough. I only just found out,” Faye said.

I didn’t press her.

I could hear the frustration in her voice, and I knew she had probably already spent enough time trying to figure things out.

She had gone to Silver Hollow expecting a good time with her family. Instead, she had walked into a crisis that apparently had been kept from her.

I understood why she was concerned.

I was about to say something when my office door opened.

I looked up.

My secretary stepped inside, holding a folder against her chest.

“Sir, the board members are all here.”

I glanced at the clock.

I had completely lost track of the time.

“Alright,” I said. “I’ll be there shortly.”

She nodded and quietly stepped back out, closing the door behind her.

I looked at my phone again.

Faye was still on the line.

“I have to go,” I said.

There was a brief pause.

“I’m at the company. The board members have arrived, and I have a meeting with them,” I

said.

“Oh.”

The disappointment in her voice was subtle, but I heard it.

“I’ll call you when I’m done, I promise.”
