I had been waiting for Alexander to call me back, but I refused to spend the entire evening sitting in my room staring at my phone.

He had told me he would call when his meeting with the board was over, and I trusted that he would. Besides, there were better things I could do with my time than wonder how long a

business meeting could possibly take.

So I went to see my parents.

My mother was in the vegetable garden behind the house when I found her, kneeling beside one of the planting beds with a small basket beside her. She had been sorting through the vegetables she had already picked, occasionally reaching into the soil to pull out another

one.

I changed into something more suitable for the garden and joined her.

For the next several hours, I allowed myself to get distracted by something as ordinary as helping my mother tend to vegetables.

It was strangely peaceful.

There was no council meeting, no discussion about North Ridge, no arguments about supplies, weapons, food, or the possibility of war. There was just the smell of damp soil, the warmth of the afternoon sun, and my mother’s occasional instructions whenever she thought I was pulling something I shouldn’t.

“You are being too rough with that,” she said when I tugged at a stubborn plant.

I looked at her.

“It doesn’t want to come out,” I said.

“That doesn’t mean you have to declare war on it,” she said.

I smiled.

“I’m beginning to think war is the only thing people around here know how to talk about,” I said.

My mother gave me a look but didn’t respond. She just smiled.

I returned my attention to the garden.

Still, no matter how much I tried to focus on what was in front of me, my mind kept returning to the problems.

I kept wondering how things had deteriorated so badly without me knowing.

I had only been away for a while.

How had everything changed so quickly?

My mother eventually asked me to carry some of the vegetables inside, and I followed her back toward the house with the basket in my hands.

We had barely reached the back door when my phone rang.

I looked down immediately.

Alexander.

My heart lifted slightly at the sight of his name.

“I’ll be right back,” I told my mother.

She nodded.

I stepped inside the house and moved away from the open doorway before answering.

“Hello?”

“Faye.”

His voice immediately made me smile.

“You finally called.”

“I know,” Alexander said, and I could hear the apology in his voice. “I’m sorry it took so long. The meeting went on much longer than I expected.”

I leaned against the wall.

“It’s fine. I figured you were busy.”

“I was.”

There was a brief pause before he continued.

“I’ve actually been thinking about what you told me.”

I became more attentive.

“Really?” I asked.

“Yes.”

His voice had lost some of its casualness.

“I kept thinking about it even while I was sitting in that meeting. How did things get so bad that Silver Hollow can’t simply refund the money or send a replacement shipment?”

I looked toward the doorway leading back to the garden.

I knew exactly what he meant.

“That’s what I was wondering too.”

Alexander continued before I could say anything else.

“Especially the part about the resources. You said Silver Hollow is struggling with food and weapons,” he asked.

“That’s what the elders said.”
