“If... if anything, I just feel like I failed you,” Baxter replied as I rested my head against his shoulder.

“No, Baxter, you didn’t. You did everything you could.”

I paused and turned to look at him.

“Yes, I was upset with you for going on this mission alone to save Gina. But, Baxter, do you have any idea that just because I was crying over Gina didn’t mean I was ready to lose you too?”

I tightened my grip on his hand.

“What made you think that you should... that sacrificing yourself would make me any happier?” I asked.

“It’s just that I couldn’t live with myself knowing my daughter was somewhere in that cave. Oh, goodness... everything is coming back. Everything has come back, and I feel so enraged knowing what they did afterward,” Baxter grunted, wrapping an arm around my waist and pulling me closer.

I nodded, taking a slow, deep breath before resting my head against his shoulder once again.

“Everything will be back to normal by tomorrow night, hopefully,” I said, crossing my fingers.

Rosetta arrived, making us turn toward her.

“How’s Daddy?” I asked, noticing how her eyes lit up at the mention of our father.

“Daddy is sleeping,” she replied. “You know what?”

She stepped onto the front porch and sat beside us on the steps, next to Baxter and me.

“Daddy said a word.”

The moment she said that, hope flared brighter than ever in my heart.

“Wait, really? What did he say?” I asked.

Rosetta’s eyes shone with excitement.

“He’s asking for his mate. He said ‘mate’ and started looking around. Mom will be so happy when she sees him.”

At the mention of our mother, Rosetta’s eyes filled with tears, and her smile slowly faded.

“Rosetta, they’ll come here to see you. Don’t worry. And it’s not like we’re going to sit around and let you remain trapped within this boundary. We’ll find a way to get you out of here,” I promised, reaching for her hand.
