Madeline simply nodded, eager to just go inside and rest. She was exhausted from the day's chaos, and Silas Hayden had just texted her about a bug in their new R&D project that she still needed to patch.
She couldn't even be bothered to explain herself to Millicent.
But her dismissive attitude instantly provoked the old woman's fury. "Call Lucius right now. Let me speak to him and see if he liked the food."
Madeline looked up. "Can't you call him yourself?"
The sudden defiance caught the older woman completely off guard.
A second later, she clamped her hand around Madeline's wrist. "Are you really throwing a fit about calling your own husband? Did you even go to the hospital? You really are a vicious piece of work, aren't you?"
Madeline had zero desire to get into a screaming match with the old woman. Making a scene would be ugly enough on its own, but this was also the elder's territory. If Barnaby decided she was disrespecting her seniors and slapped her too, she'd be the one taking the hit.
So, she pulled out her phone and dialed Lucius's number.
The line rang for quite a while before someone finally picked up.
"Hello?"
It was Liliana's voice.
Hearing Liliana answer the phone didn't shock Madeline in the slightest.
After all, she had just been told that Lucius was so desperate for one last moment of intimacy with Liliana that he completely ignored his own torn-up back.
They were so deeply in love, so inseparable, that boundaries didn't exist for them.
The tears the man had shed that afternoon were nothing more than crocodile tears, a pathetic theatrical performance put on for the crowd. He was desperately clinging to the marriage purely because he refused to give up his inheritance.
His true, profound love was reserved entirely for Liliana.
So, what did it matter if Liliana answered his phone?
Madeline spoke with chilling calm. "Millicent wants to speak to Lucius. Put him on the phone."
Liliana obviously knew it was Madeline on the other end.
