But now, Madeline was actually using a recorded phone call to threaten him.
He fell silent for a long moment, deep in thought.
He convinced himself that she was just throwing a tantrum, that she wanted a divorce because she loved him too much and was furious. What woman wouldn't be enraged hearing audio of her husband sleeping with a mistress?
Once her anger faded, everything would be fine.
So, he decided to stall for time.
"I don't have time tomorrow."
Madeline stared at him, her gaze sharp. "It doesn't matter if you're busy. I'll have my corporate lawyer send you a divorce agreement. You need to sign it immediately, or my lawyer will release the audio without hesitation."
Lucius hadn't expected her to be so resolute. Panic flared in his chest, and he quickly said, "I really don't want a divorce. Just give me one more chance. We can still talk about this. You can make any demand you want, and I'll agree to it, whatever it is."
Madeline watched him. His usual arrogant, high-and-mighty facade had suddenly shattered into a million pieces just because she had him cornered.
He looked so utterly defeated that his eyes were rimmed with red.
It turned out that the nobility she had always seen in him was nothing more than a crown she had woven out of her own love. The moment she stopped loving him, he was nothing.
When Madeline had cried yesterday, it probably hadn't even been for him. It had been for herself, mourning the years of her youth poured into this relationship. In the end, the love had existed only in her imagination. She had taken a deeply flawed man and convinced herself he was the best person in the world.
In this moment, she was fully awake.
Madeline had nothing left to say to him. "I don't have any demands, except a divorce."
Lucius felt so miserable he could barely breathe.
