Madeline closed her eyes, a chilling wave of desolation rippling through her normally steady heart at Lucius's words.
She spoke with cold detachment. "Target her? Lucius, let's get one thing straight. You and your mistress ruined my company's listing yesterday, not me. Even now, you're still defending her. Just yesterday, you publicly admitted you willingly slept with her, and yet you still have the audacity to think I'm the one targeting her? Do you realize how utterly psychotic you sound?"
"Are you saying that my feelings don't matter? That you can publicly confess to cheating on me, and I'm just supposed to smile, accept it, and be thrilled with the outcome?"
"I came here today for a divorce, not to watch the two of you play the tragic victims. And as for Arthur's proposal? I reject it. That's a living breathing life, and I'm not that ruthless. But as for you and me—we are completely finished."
Arthur frowned, clearly displeased by her defiance. "Madeline, it's not that I'm breaking my promise. I am offering to erase this child for you. I will use the Whitman family's authority to bring her here and have the estate doctors handle the procedure personally to ensure the child doesn't survive. You won't have to worry about this threat ever again."
Madeline met Arthur's gaze head-on, her tone unyielding. "Arthur, this isn't about threats. I refuse to end one nightmare by participating in another act of cruelty. All I care about is the divorce. I don't give a damn about Liliana or that baby. That is Whitman family business, and it has absolutely nothing to do with me."
Panic seized Lucius. He stepped forward to grab Madeline's hand, but she recoiled in absolute disgust.
"Madeline, stop acting out!" he pleaded. "Are you really going to throw away all our years together over one misunderstanding? I swear I'll never do it again. Just give me one more chance. Please?"
"Acting out?" Madeline let out a hollow laugh. She wasn't acting out.
